A special delight of this lovely region are the crystal rivers and lakes. The latter, especially, are almost tropically warm in summer, and so much safer to swim than the sea. Some have beaches with restaurants/café's, others you can have all to yourself. Visit the Roman ruins at Conimbriga, the riverside medieval university city of Coimbra, World Heritage Tomar, the vast golden beaches of the Costa de Prata (Silver Coast), the 'lost' mountain villages of the beautiful and verdant Serra da Lousã. This is the real Portugal, not a tourist rip-off!
