Vacation Rental Description
The Villa Ricardo is a charming villa located in a beautiful slope above the entrance of Porto da Cruz. It is a large property with a high level comfortable accommodation in a quiet location, has several terraces enjoying uninterrupted panoramic sea view, and a subtropical garden of exotic fruit trees and small banana trees.
The property owner valued a stylish and friendly environment. The house has 3 double bedrooms, (with the possibility of an extra bed and cradle for baby), all with private bathroom (shower) and TVset. In the winter all the rooms are heated by a device that recovers the heat released by the fireplace, and automatically distributes it to the rooms. The sitting-room is equipped with TVset, DVD, Stereo System, Computer, Internet WI-FI, Safety Deposit Box, WC, and the kitchen is fully equipped. Outside you can enjoy the private pool, (heated), and the sunbathing area with views to the ocean and the Village.
In September, wine is made in Villa Ricardo, by a centennial traditional process. There is also a historical wine cellar.
Twice a week the house is cleaned, linen is changed and the rooms are provided with fresh towels.
Porto da Cruz is one of the parishes belonging to the Machico council. Its name came from a cross (Cruz) that was placed by the explorers on the bay once used as port (Porto). The attractions of this small parish are hidden and youll have to take a closer look to find them. One of them is the old sugar cane factory, which is still operating, as it was when it started with the sugar production in 1927. It boasts a 26 meter tall tower and when its working you might even see steam coming out!
Not to be missed is also the place known as Penha dÁguia, an imposing rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial. Getting up there might be a challenge, as the road is very steep, but the songs of the birds will help you on the way up and once you get there youll be sure it was definitely worth
Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as vinho seco americano (dry red wine made of a type of grape called americana), this local product is the theme for a celebration usually happening in September (Festa do Vinho). In Porto da Cruz there are another two wonderful religious celebrations, with great beauty. The first occurs on days 15 and 16 of August, and the second, at the following weekend (Saturday and Sunday). They are celebrations that visitors should not miss!!!

Madeira's capital, Funchal is an enchanting town set on a glittering bay against a background of soaring green mountains. Winding cobbled streets meander between elegant colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the verdant hillside. Funchals historic core overlooks the harbour and features some fine government buildings and stately 18th-century mansions. Its deep natural harbour attracted early settlers in the 15th century.
What to see? The simple whitewashed Sé Cathedral was built between 1486 and 1514. Inside, its main features are the magnificent mudejar ceiling of Madeira cedar wood and the voluptuous Baroque carving of the golden Sacramento chapel to the right of the main altar. Now a museum, the Quinta das Cruzes on Calçada do Pico is the house where the islands discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, once lived. Next door is the pretty 16th century church of Santa Clara where he lies buried. The Old Blandy Wine Lodge occupies part of a former Franciscan friary dating back to the 17th century. Guided visits include a tour of the cellars and a wine-tasting session.

The use of the Internet in computer's Villa, and the Wi-Fi access from your own laptop, is an extra. The pool could be heated. This is an extra service.

The Porto the Cruz village is on the northeast coast of Madeira and from there you can quickly get to the Airport (12 minutes by car), to the nearest golf course in Santo da Serra (15 minutes by car) and to the neighbouring cities and villages like Machico, Santo da Serra, Santana and Faial, amongst other interesting places you can easily visit. The Porto da Cruz village has a Public natural swimming pool (sea water), a black sand beach, mini markets, restaurants equipped with several different kitchens, bars, transport services, health services, able to provide to the visitor, the satisfaction of emerging daily needs. The weather in Madeira Island is generally quite stable and mild throughout the year. Porto da Cruz has in its extensive and cut coast, two natural beaches of black sand, and a public swimming pool of salt water. The water temperature (22 centigrade) is surprisingly enjoyable in the summer.

Excellent accomodation. Very well kept, and clean, with all necessary amenities in place. Beautiful viwes on the ocean and the mountains from the house. Very comfortable and a pleasant stay. Special thanks to the owner of the villa Mr. Ricardo and the houskeeper Betty who was extremely friendly and helpful in everything. Beautiful surroundings, easy access to the ocean and the beach. Overall imperession is extremely good. Villa Ricardo made our holidays in Madeira unforgettable!

Villar Ricardo is indeed the best accommodation that we have experienced on any European holiday of this kind. A superbly maintained property that is very clean and extremely comfortable throughout. The owners provided really good customer service and we were made very welcome from the moment of our arrival.
The description of the villa's position was indeed accurate and perhaps our only reservation would be the traffic noise that was rather invasive at the start of our holiday.
Porto da Cruz boasts superb views and character whilst being close to connecting routes to other places on Madeira Island. The restaurants in the village seem pleasant although there are greater choices in the nearby town of Machico which also boasts a very useful supermarket! Infact, Machico is a good focus for night time activity that Porto da Cruz does not offer to the same extent.
We would gladly return to Villa Ricardo and would recommend this accommodation to anybody looking to discover the beauty of Madeira Island.

Villa Ricardo was a lovely place for my family to go between Christmas and the New Year. Mr Ricardo and Mrs Betty made us very welcome and looked after all the queries which we had very efficiently and found some good places for us to eat and gave us some useful tips about the Island. The villa is well appointed and the fireplace was great. In the winter it is too cold to swim but it was still lovely to sit by the pool for breakfast when the morning sun shines onto the terrace. Porto da Cruz is an authentic quiet village and a change from the bustle of Funchal and yet an easy car drive from it. It has some spectacular countryside around it and is a perfect base for those keen on walking the levadas or exploring the island.
