Vacation Rental Description
Arco da Calheta is a sleepy village nestled into terraces of an ancient and extinct volcano. The village centres around a church, a coffee shop/bar and small streets of private houses. While the yellow sand beaches of Calheta are within downhill, walking distance - you might want to get a taxi or bus back up the hill unless you are really, really fit!
Arco has many small bars and restaurants - it is within easy distance of a really good Pizza/Italian restaurant. You can order by phone and collect later or eat in the modern restaurant.
You might choose to scare yourself to death by taking up the offer of para-gliding from the top of the Arc - from the car park of the Costa Verde restaurant. I am sometimes a bit crazy but not crazy enough to take in the amazing view offered by this holiday activity of a life-time. People tell me that when out over the sea the arc that would complete the circle of the ancient fumerole of the volcano can be seen. The ocean is clear and clean and fascinating!
There is deep sea fishing from the harbour/marina in Calheta, where there is also a selection of bars and restaurants pleasingly placed for people/boat watching and just chilling with a cold beer!
Levada walking is a must to invstigate when visiting Madeira. We are really well placed to get on both the higher and lower levada walks. We have books and maps advising you of short/long/steep and scary or gentle and reviving walks, there is something for every level of ability.
We have been lucky enough to spot whales in the bay from our balcony and it is common to see pods of dolphins chasing shoals of smaller fish across the view!
The apartment offers a stylish but relaxing ambience. The sitting room is all glass wall at the front giving guests an open aspect across the garden, over the village terracotta tiled roofs to the ocean. In the sitting room there is a comfortable futon sofa to slouch on. A single chair, a desk/table with computer and full and free access to the Internet. The bedroom has a comfortable double bed, a sofa, dressing table, side tables, robe hanging space and a television with satellite connection to Astra 2... this gives all of the Freeview channels available on a Freeview box in UK. Therefore, the programmes are in English. We could put a local area in order to achieve local television. We provide our guests with a collection of DVDs some older, many new, some for children, there is a variety of genre, from easy viewing romantic comedy through to reality, gritty scare you near to death movies! Eeek!
We can also provide a speaker dock for an iPod. Guests need to ask for this facility.
We also provide a fan for the hotter days and an electric heater for the few, rare colder days.
You can expect to find towels for all occaisions for your use. Fluffy towels for the shower, big wrap around towels for the poolside and some brightly coloured towels for the beach. You will also have hand towels and flannels provided as part of your deal. All bedlinen is crunchy cool best quality cotton and provided at no extra cost.
When you arrive you can also expect to find basic food-stuffs to start you off on your self catering break. Furthermore we put in the fridge bread, cheese, wine or beer, tea and milk - so even if you arrive late at night there is no need to rush out and find somewhere to eat in the dark.

Arco da Calheta is a sleepy village. However if you want to access the "flesh-pots" of Funchal .... (I do have my tongue in my cheek!) There is a Casino in Funchal and I am sure there are nightclubs, there is a theatre and there are Cinemas and a concert hall too - BUT that really isn't what people come to Madeira for. I would say that if clubbing and/or high culture is high on your list of holiday needs, then you are looking at the wrong island.
Madeira is more about, nature, walking, sometimes in breathtaking scenery needing high levels of fitness and endurance.
It is ideal terrain for mountain biking but it hasn't really taken off in a big way here yet.
