Sintra is unique and deserves its status as a world heritage site. First the Moors, then the Portuguese kings who expelled them, built their castles and palaces there. In later ages, Sintra attracted rich foreigners who created villas and stately homes with lush gardens and romantic architecture - outdone by King Don Fernando, whose bizarre palace anticipated mad King Ludwig's Rhine castle by several years.
The location is ideal for exploring not just Sintra but central Portugal, given the easy access to the motorway system. Lisbon is only half an hour by train or car, and Cascais and Estoril 20 minutes away. Further afield - in easy day trips from Sintra - you can visit the walled city of Obidos, the Knights Templar castle of Tomar and Batalha Abbey, the monastery palace of Mafra, the seaside towns of Sesimbra and Ericeira, Palmela castle and Arrabida national park.
The house stands in an area of Sintra designated as historical heritage, where no new construction is allowed.
Lovingly restored over the years to the highest standards by its interior designer owners, the group of 4 houses known as Casas Amarelas stands in its own gardens above the street in the Sao Pedro area of historic Sintra. Newly furnished with a mix of rustic and modern pieces, all the houses are now ready to welcome guests. Casas Amarelas has become an example of how to restore period buildings in Sintra, a marriage of comfort and tradition. Staying here will not only enhance your experience of Sintra by 'living' its heritage, but you will also be contributing to the preservation of this beautiful period town.
The 4 houses have been furnished with style and comfort in mind - heating and air-conditioning, wooden floors, large bathrooms, Plasma TVs with cable and DVD, dishwasher and washing machine - combined with the unique Sintra style of antiques, traditional colours and texture.
With restaurants, bars, food shops, antique and other shopping on the doorstep, there is a village atmosphere surrounding Casas Amarelas in Sao Pedro de Sintra. The famous craft and local delicacies market of Sao Pedro is held here every two weeks.
Sintra also boasts a rich cultural life. During the months of June and July the Sintra Festival attracts to a large number of classical music and ballet lovers, owing to the quality of the internatioal artists and the programme. Performnces are held in churches, palaces, the theatre, and in parks and country estates in the region. Other activities are held all year round.
Casas Amarelas is also an ideally situated for golfer, with 5 championship courses nearby.
The Estoril motor racing track is another local attraction.
Sintra is also good for walks, whether in the grounds of its stately homes or the wooded slopes of its mountain.
The local tourism office in Sintra is an excellent information centre for places to visit, cultural activities, transport and organised tours.
