Sintra is unique and deserves its status as a world heritage site. First the Moors, then the Portuguese kings who expelled them, built their castles and palaces there. In later ages, Sintra attracted rich foreigners who created villas and stately homes with lush gardens and romantic architecture - outdone by King Don Fernando, whose bizarre palace anticipated mad King Ludwig's Rhine castle by several years.
The location is ideal for exploring not just Sintra but central Portugal, given the easy access to the motorway system. Lisbon is only half an hour by train or car, and Cascais and Estoril 20 minutes away. Further afield - in easy day trips from Sintra - you can visit the walled city of Obidos, the Knights Templar castle of Tomar and Batalha Abbey, the monastery palace of Mafra, the seaside towns of Sesimbra and Ericeira, Palmela castle and Arrabida national park.
The house stands in an area of Sintra designated as historical heritage, where no new construction is allowed.
