The two cottages, which each accommodate up to six people are set in a landscaped garden of 5000 sq. meters; the owners’ house is on site and has a separate Studio (60m2) for up to four people, also for rent.
The village of Mouronho is within easy walking distance and has many amenities including a Chemist, Post Office, Butchers and a small General Store. There is also a Bar and a Catholic Church.
The area is beautifully forested and surrounded by the mountain ranges of Serra do Caramulo, Serra do Açor, Serra de Lousã and the Serra da Estrella which has the highest point in Portugal.
There are many beautiful walks within the area including a 3 km trek to the River Alva, there you can find one of the pretty river beaches used locally for bathing.
Also within the region are some interesting towns, Arganil (7 km) has a busy market every Thursday and Tabua (13 km) has a local Sunday market where you can also sample the hot barbecued chicken enjoyed by the local folk.
Some other towns well worth a visit are Luso, with its natural spring, the very old town of Coja, Monte-Mor-O-Velho, Oliveria do Hospital and Carregal do Sal. If you venture to the top of the Serra de Estrella mountains you can visit the town of Seia, which lies in the foothills. Most towns have a wide selection of supermarkets, shops, banks, bars and restaurants.
The Cities here are rich in Portuguese history, Coimbra, with its world famous library and old university and Viseu with its fine architecture. For archaeological interest there is the town of Conimbriga, which has a Roman excavation, and the village of Piodão, built entirely of xisto stone. Natural areas include buçaco, mata de Margança, Vale do Alva and Fraga da Pena which has a beautiful waterfall.
Figueira da Foz is a good day out if you fancy a swim in the sea, with it’s wide sandy west coast beaches and pretty candy stripe beach huts, always a fun day out for the children.
