Vacation Rental Description
Villa dos Arcos is a delightful house with great character, facing south at the edge of a truly unspoilt Portuguese village. It is traditionally furnished and has attractive mature gardens with a private swimming-pool. There is the option of an additional cottage (Casita) in the grounds, converted from two old barns, enabling two families (or generations) to holiday together, but with a degree of privacy. Enjoy the unique combination of authentic village life, together with the convenience of a comfortable villa and pool, normally found only in the development areas. Indeed it is that rare discovery - the best of both worlds. The village has two small general stores, bread is delivered daily, there are three restarants serving simple local dishes. There is no night life - rather it is a place for peace and tranquility. The 200 year old village is surrounded by historic sites and Roman remains. It is situated in the only conservation area, half a mile from completely unspoilt coastline, with wonderful cliff-top walks and amazing wildlife, at the western end of the Algarve near Cape St Vincent. It is one hour's drive from Faro airport.

Facilities
A handsome villa, at the edge of the village with delightful mature gardens & a large private pool. It has a superb sunny (25 foot) sitting room at first floor level, with wood-burning stove, overlooking a pasture often grazed by goats and valleys dotted with white windmills and eucalyptus forests. 2 French windows which lead onto a wide sun terrace looking towards the coastal cliffs. Steps curve down to the mature walled garden, peach, orange & lemon trees, vines & a gazebo. The pool, with its own terrace, is adjacent. The ground floor has 2 large twin bedrooms with French windows into the garden & 2 bathrooms (baths & showers). The optional cottage (Casita) has a sitting room, twin bedroom & bathroom.
Activities
Golf :Parque da Floresta. An excellent scenic 18 hole championship course, never crowded, in a charming forest setting with many water holes and challenges
Bird Watching etc.
There is an abundance of bird life, including Sardinian and Melodious Warblers, Montagu's and Marsh Harriers, and Egrets. There are many other rare species in the area including Pratincoles, Stilts, Hoopoes, Bee-eaters, Black and Red Kites, Vultures, Eagles and migrants (en route to Africa). Donkey sanctuary nearby. Superb wildflowers, butterflies on the many walks.

Professional artist who restored a ruined village property in the west Algarve's conservation area
I am a professional artist and first visited the Algarve in 1980 in the search for material for painting. I was saddened to find how much of the coast had already been built up in large luxury developments, so I travelled further west until I reached the conservation area towards Cape St Vincent. There I discovered what I had hoped to find - an area still completely unspoilt, with a series of glorious empty bays, and charming small villages.
I had not considered buying a property but when I saw the ruins of a fine village house in a delightful little village just half a mile from the coast, I fell in love with it and there began a five year period of faithful restoration. This became Casa dos Arcos, a large village property with four twin bedrooms. The adjacent property, also ruined, then became available, and to prevent anything undesirable happening to it, I bought that as well, spending a further three years restoring it into Villa dos Arcos , with two twin bedrooms and a lovely garden, and adding what was certainly the first swimming pool to be built in the village. Finally I converted two old barns in the grounds into a cottage for two people (Casita do Pintor - I being the 'pintor').
Although I had not originally thought about renting the property , it seemed the obvious thing to do when I was not using it myself, and over the years people have discovered it, mostly by word of mouth and personal recommendation, so that there are now families who return every year, having found that the combination of an attractive traditional property with all the facilities of a modern house together with garden and pool, yet in a completely authentic village where life continues much as it has done for the past 200 years, to be both unique and irresistible.
If you are looking for a sophisticated resort with night life and entertainment, this is not the place for you. But if you value tranquility, undiscovered beaches, wonderful birds and wildlife and the picturesque life of a working village, you will find this place to be truly 'the best of both worlds'.
