Vacation Rental Description
Armona Island is a living museum or maybe a relic...? of by gone holidays - the one's you remember as a child when mum and dad would pack your bucket and spade and one swimming costume in the bag and then load you all up in the back of the car and head off to the beach for a week.
Armona Island (or Isla De Armona to the Portuguese) is a magical, special place and most people want to keep this a secret - and I would like to keep it to myself too - but the magic is worth sharing.
We were looking for a holiday house on the more lively Tavira Island (Isla De Tavira - voted top 10 beach holidays in the world) http://ibnlive.in.com/news/world-of-wonders-top-10-beach-holidays-for-families/99196-26.html
but there was no villas to rent.... only a campsite - I then stumbled upon the little beach villas on Armona Island - the next island along and far less commercial - but BEACHES are just as great.... and we booked a little cottage immediately.
We holidayed here in the summer of August 2008 and were completely entranced.....there are no cars on the island, apparently someone has a bike - but we have never seen it .....there are maybe a few hundred 'people in the know' and the best bit ?? the children can roam and play with no worries !!
You can only get here by ferry or private boat - it is only 15 minutes across the Ria Formosa Lagoon and yet 40 years away from the chaos of modern life.....there are over 12 kilometres of pristine beach, rolling sand dunes, excellent fishing and clamming (which is very very popular), beautiful sunrises & sunsets, a few portuguese 'corner shops' selling fresh produce, a couple of cafes/restaurants where the locals seem to sit all day and drink endless cups of coffee, that is - until it is too hot and the 'cervajas' BEER's are the order of the day!
As the ferry docks at the little jetty - you will see there is a little crowd of people waiting to board the ferry to go back to civilization in Olhao - but you're the lucky ones - this is where your holiday begins.
As the ferry pulls away from the jetty - the children all whoop and run across the jetty and start diving bombing and swan diving into the Formosa - its a very popular game and the teenage boys spend a lot of time (watching the girls in skimpy bikini's) while perfecting their impressive dives.
A short walk along the main footpath that leads from the lagoon beaches to the large sandy beach you come to the children's playground and Cafe Convivio - our little villa is just behind here. As you approach you will walk down a little pathway lined with pepper and mimosa trees - the whitewashed walls of the villa can be seen tucked down the pathway backing onto the tidal lagoon that if you are lucky enough to be there when there is a really high tide the water will lap at the back of the garden !
Inside the villa is a open plan lounge, dining room & kitchen - off this area there are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Look up and you can see the high pine panelled ceiling and a mezzanine open plan room - up here is another bedroom and more generous living space. Outside the villa there is a grassy front garden and terrace with sun loungers and at the back of the villa is an enclosed terrace with tables & chairs and a brick BBQ. There is also another grassy garden and views towards the Ria Formosa and the beautiful sunsets.
There are all the modern facilities you need including oven & hob, washing machine, fridge & freezer and TV's & DVD players and MEO satelite - but seriously ...... you will not be interested in TV !
Robins Nest on Armona Island (Ilha De Armona) is a perfect retreat for families, singles, couples - anyone who needs to 'get away from it all' and those who intend to write that long thought of book - all your inspiration is here and its paradise :-)

Owner Location Comment
Armona Island is located within the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, it is 9 kilometres long and 1 kilometre wide – it boasts long sandy, unspoilt beaches and lagoons.
Despite being so close to the more developed parts of the Algarve, the eastern coast remains largely untouched by mass tourism. In a single day you can eat charcoal grilled sardines with the locals, discover genuine Portuguese fishing ports, Roman saltpans, award-winning white beaches, Moorish architecture and see the rare web-footed Algarve water dog.
It’s surprising that so few visitors to the Algarve travel east of Faro. Despite the ease of access via the new motorway, it remains virtually undeveloped and yet is so charming. The natural beauty of the coast and inland areas are worth exploration and reveal much more about the real Portugal, its history and its people than any of the resort towns further west.
The approach when flying into Faro often follows the coastal nature reserve of the Rio Formosa and even a glimpse, from the air, is enough to inspire curiosity. It is a wonderfully unspoilt area that stretches eastwards for 40 kilometres, almost as far as the Spanish border. There are sand bank islands including Armona, Culatra, Farol, Tavira and Fuzeta and sand bars creating tranquil lagoons and estuary formations that are constantly transformed by the tides.
There are walking trails through the reserve, where it is possible to enjoy the splendour of this natural wilderness. The resident population of birds increases during autumn and spring with many species calling in on their migratory routes. Flamingos, White Storks and Black-Winged Stilts are familiar sights throughout the year and seeing such large and spectacular birds in their natural habitat is not to be forgotten.
There is also a working tidal mill on the reserve in Olhao and inside this splendidly restored building there are six great millstones, grinding grain. There’s also the remains of Roman saltpans, where 2,000 years ago sea water was evaporated to leave behind the salt, important at that time for preserving foodstuffs. These are familiar features all along the coast and even today there is a commercial industry in salt production.
To get to Armona Island you take the ferry from the town of Olhão. Olhao is a genuine Portuguese fishing port complete with an early morning fish market on the quay. Its traditional way of life has been respected and protected. The flat- roofed houses of the old fishermen’s quarters are Arab in design and are not found anywhere else on the Algarve. The town has had long standing connections with equivalent fishing ports, across the water in Morocco, where these flat roofs are a common sight and used for drying fish in the sunshine.
