If you really want to get away... Just north of the Algarve, in some of the most remote and unspoilt countryside in Europe, lies Quinta do Barranco da Estrada, a small oasis on the shores of a vast freshwater and mosquito-free lake.
It nestles in the wild hills of the lower Alentejo - a sparsely populated region of exceptional and unique beauty. It really is rural tourism at its best.

For more than quarter of a century the Quinta has provided a haven for those from near and far to spend some time away from the rat race.
Its sheltered position and micro-climate allow an abundance of plants to flourish in the fruit and flower gardens, offering peace and privacy to guests, many of whom are happiest lazing in the sun at the water's edge.

The lake, right on your doorstep and one of the largest in Europe, (with an average summer temperature of 82ºF), is a refreshing, (and unpolluted), change from the sea, but for those who like beaches, the Algarve, as well as the spectacularly unspoilt West Coast, is only an hour away.
Though close to the Algarve, it's relatively unknown, with a busy day being the sight of over five boats, and in the summer the Quinta's mature fruit and flower gardens lead guests down to the shore where a variety of watersports are on offer, overlooked by the lawns close to the water's edge.

The Quinta's ten en-suite rooms are airy, cool and comfortable and the bathrooms are spacious.
Much of the excellent home-made food is fresh from the organic garden - honey from local hives, free-range eggs, bread baked daily on the premises and of course fish from the lake.

But if you want to be active there's plenty to do - sailing, canoeing, fishing, swimming and walking and there are a variety of speciality courses on offer, notably Birdwatching, (and Nature Loving in general), and Shiatsu massage.
The Birdwatching is guided by the resident owner, Frank McClintock, and covers the whole of southern Portugal, while the Shiatsu is undertaken by Daniela Hentz of the Hara Shiatsu Institute of Vienna."
The Quinta is also suited to large families or special interest groups looking for exclusive private accommodation.

Facilities
For the active there's plenty to do. Swimming, sailing, canoeing and fishing are available for children, beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike right on your doorstep, while a vast sparsely populated countryside dotted with small Alentejan "montes" set amidst hillsides of cork trees awaits all walkers; we'll even provide the dogs if you want some company! Sailing or canoeing are both included in the price of your stay, and the views over the lake bring a new surprise every minute, while offering a fascinating variety of birds and animals for the wildlife enthusiast. From hoopoes and herons to tree frogs and mongooses, each season brings its own delights. The surrounding countryside is in a wonderful birdwatching area and the Quinta's owner is a Birdwatching Guide, running guided birdwatching trips throughout the year covering the whole of Southern Portugal.
Activities
We offer "Well Being" courses with accredited therapists and even have our own resident Shiatsu masseuse who is always on hand and willing to smooth away those city stresses - even when the Quinta is not running one of it's definitive courses.
However it's not just nature and water lovers who benefit from the Quinta's geographical location in this sparsely populated region.
The roads of the area, with beautiful sweeping curves and very little traffic, bring motorcyclists from all over the world and the Quinta's staff are always on hand to promote their favourite rides!
If you're thinking of a holiday here in beautiful rural Portugal, whether you're the active type or you just want to relax, it would not be fair to omit the lashings of delicious food always on offer, and for those who want to learn how we do it there are cookery courses at various times throughout the year.

- Nearest Town : Santa Clara a Velha at 13 kilometers distance
- Travel Info: The Quinta can be easily accessed by road. There are regular trains from Lisbon or Faro, both of which are serviced by scheduled or charter flights from most major airports. Guests can arrange their own car hire or they can be collected from the airport (Faro is 1 1/2 hours drive away, Lisbon about two and a half). The Quinta is happy to arrange road transfers between the airport or the local railway station.

Our minimum stay is two nights during Mid and High Season. Deposits are needed to reserve any room at the Quinta. This can be done via PayPal, (via the "Book Online" page of our own site), or to our UK or Portuguese accounts. Please note though that there is an additional 4% Banking Charge when paying via PayPal and a 5% Currency Conversion Charge if paying to our UK account. There is no charge for payment in euros to our Portuguese account. Should you wish to pay to either our Portuguese or British accounts please email us. The standard deposit is 25% with a minimum of the equivalent of 2 night's stay. Once accepted, this deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable except in exceptional cases and cancellations within two weeks prior to arrival incur the full cost of the nights reserved.

"Quite simply ... AWESOME !!!"
Every now and again, albeit not very often, something wonderful happens in your life and suffice to say, as far as holidays are concerned, Paradise in Portugal really hits the mark.
The word ‘Paradise’ is often mis-used but quite honestly, this place really re-defines the word ... it is simply sensational.
If you want to go to the usual ‘flesh pots’ then head to the Algarve Coast. If you want to live in comfort, in simply sumptuous surroundings, where the pace of life is horizontal, where you can relax and reflect, then look no further - this is it. The location is ‘awesome’ - there is no other word for it.
Frank and Daniela are wonderful hosts - Frank is a laugh a minute and Daniela ... well her culinary skills have to be seen to be believed. Her meals would grace any top end restaurant. Nothing is too much trouble for these guys - they are quite simply ‘Top’ people.
The place has a really fantastic homely feel to it. I take my hat off to Frank - he has built the place up from nothing over a considerable period of time. They are passionate about wildlife - the premises is totally sympathetic to same.
Hand on heart, I can honestly say that there are no negative points - I could have wept when I left.
People often make holiday promises about getting back in touch etc etc but in this instance I can honestly say .... as in the immortal words of Arnie Schwartzenegger .... “I’LL BE BACK” - and that is MOST definite.

Paradise in Portugal
The Quinta has been built from a ruin discovered by the present owners while on their honeymoon. Set in unspoilt countryside it has a stunning view over one of Europe’s cleanest lakes. Highly individual, it caters for a wide spectrum of travellers and holiday seekers who seek premium quality. Its food now has an international reputation mirrored by its fantastic service and informal atmosphere, but don’t take our word for it; visit their web site and see the press reviews!
All rooms are uncluttered, cool and simple and all are en suite with fantastic views over the lake. Large garden falls down to the sauna and shoreline where watersports are on offer. The Quinta is very Nature orientated and Guided Birdwatching is a speciality as are Well being courses. The food is excellent, with most of it being organic or local produce and all made on the premises.
Set in an area of unrivalled beauty, the Quinta relies for its power on solar energy backed up by a silenced generator and all waste is re-utilised if at all possible. In an area of little employment, the Quinta materially alters the well being of the local population and the owners, while specialising in ornithology, are also very involved in all conservation aspects for the whole of southern Portugal.
