Set high on a steep, west-facing slope below
the mediaeval walled village of Evoramonte,
24 kilometres from Évora, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, and 14 from Estremoz, with
its ancient royal palace, Monte do Chafariz
offers you magnificent views over the thickly
wooded hills of the Serra d’Ossa and the
ancient village of Vimieiro to the distant
Castle of Arraiolos.
Evoramonte is thought to be the site of the
pre-historic Ebora, and was certainly on the
Roman road between Merida and Évora.
The house nestles into the hillside, protected
by schist terraces. The gentle, soothing sound
of water flowing from the spring, the chafariz.
is always present. Chinese carp leap in the
terrace pool.
The landscape is marked, not only by the strong presence of ancient olive groves, but
also by groves of orange, fig and walnut. In
the evening the soft light appears to undulate
as it silhouettes the contours of the hills,
while the sheep bells announce the end of
the day. The sunsets are fantastic, whether
enjoyed from the living room or the terrace.
There are beautiful walks along almost secret
paths lined with rosemary, lavender and rock
roses. The house is set beside a terrace
shaded by trees and vines, a wonderful place
to sling your hammock.
Above, the castle rises majestically, dreaming
of Moorish princesses, so deeply loved, and
legendary knights who came, in the heart of
the night, to slake their thirst with the fresh
water of the spring.
The façade of the chafariz was constructed
in the 15th century, and is a classified
national monument. Its structure embraces
and determines the architecture of the house.
The house has two bedrooms, two large
living rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen
(including separate fridge and freezer, gas
cooker, washing machine, food mixers, etc.),
and a bathroom. It has mains electricity
supply. There is a wood-burning salamander
in the living room, and gas heating in the
other rooms. And there is a traditional oven
for those who would like to test their skills
at baking, or at producing the perfect roast.
The village facilities (bank, shops, cafes) are
a 10-minute walk. Lisbon is but 150
kilometres away, the Algarve 250, Seville
about 300, Madrid less than 500.
In hot days of Summer time there are three public swimming pools near by, A beautiful one Estremoz and two more in Evora and Arroilos. The village of Mora 20 minutes by car there is a nice river beach where swimming and fishing is a wonderful pleasure.

The area around Evoramonte has not yet been discovered by the mass tourism. Towns and villages are peaceful and local people are very gentle. It is good to walk to nature reservations, horse riding or swimming in one of a few public swimming pools of the nearby villages. Restaurants and bars are pretty good and cheap.
The surroundings are a paradise for hikers, culture lovers, bird watchers and botanists. It is a heaven for astronomers as well, as usual the nights are crystal clear.

Near Évora, the World Cultural Heritage city, we can find several 6000 years old stone circles, the fortresses of Evoramonte, Elvas, Estremoz and Arraiolos and several museums: all are within half an hour car drive.

The remain due amount has to be payed during check in after verification of house conditions.If cancellation occurs until one month before the reservation period, half of the deposit will be refunded to the rental. In case the rental do not want to trouble doing the final cleaning before check out a cleaning tax of 40 euros is required.
