Location Information
The Dam Square Apartments are next to the very famous Dam Square. Its
name derives from its original function: a dam on the Amstel River,
hence also the name of the city. Built in approximately 1270, the dam
was the first connection between the settlements on both sides of the
river. The Damrak, or the former mouth of the Amstel River, was
partially filled and since then the Dam Square has been surrounded by
land on all sides.
Besides the Gothic beauty that stands next to the Koninklijk Paleis, the
15th-century Nieuwe Kerk, which now functions as an exhibition space,
you will find food stalls, restaurants and shops, including the trendy
Bijenkorf, the Magna Plaza, the Bonneterie and the Amsterdam Diamond
centre. But without a doubt the Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace) is the
jewel of the crown.
The little streets that cross these canals are fantastic for shopping,
having great lunches and enjoying the typically Amsterdam cafés and what
else is there to say about the many bars and clubs in the city
centre..! The Anne Frank house is only a fifteen minutes walk and the
lovely Jordaan area is reachable within a five minutes walk. So is the
famous Red Light District and it is just a ten minutes walk to the
Central Station.
It's very easy to find means of public transport, specially trams. But
then again, you are in a privilege position to access the endless
display of hot spots around town. Art museums, theatre and architecture
are all part of the Amsterdam scene and simply walking through the
colourful neighbourhoods offers an exceptional cultural experience.
