In the secluded neighbourood of Cannaregio, off the beaten track yet near Rialto and the main sights of the city, palazzo Longo was built at the end of the 15th century to be the home of a member of the Venetian Senate. Despite its changing hands many times since then, the building has managed to keep its grandeur and unique atmosphere.Its charm and the convenient location – a few minutes away the Lagoon opens onto the islands of Murano and San Michele providing a gorgeous view –, at a walking distance from many art masterpieces and historic places, make a stay at palazzo Longo an unforgettable experience, the ideal holiday combining culture and relax with gourmet pleasures: do not miss the traditional dishes offered in the restaurants and trattorias of Cannaregio, which serve very good Venetian cuisine at reasonable prices.
Late Gothic Palazzo Longo looks onto Fondamenta della Misericordia, close to the small harbour of Sacca della Misericordia, which offers a sweeping view of the north lagoon. Here is one of the few areas in Venice that have managed to keep a peaceful atmoshere even when alleys and squares are packed with tourists.
Access to the building is through a superb entrance hall. The apartment is part of the first floor. It was completely refurbished in 2007 using traditional Venetian materials and techniques. It is on two floors, joined by elegant wooden stairs, and can sleep 4/5 persons. On the first floor there is a large living room with a fitted kitchen along one of its walls and a comfortable sofa where you can relax after a day out, a bathroom with marble floor and walls. A few steps of the flight of stairs lead to the loft with a comfortable double sofa bed. Three more steps climb to the second floor where there is a large bedroom, with an adjoining wardrobe room. A second bathroom with shower and a storeroom are also on this floor. The flat is equipped with central heating, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, fridge and freezer, toaster, TV, ADSL Internet connection, pans and pots, hair dryer, iron and ironing board. Bedlinen, duvets and towels are provided. Cleaning service on request.
A few steps, through the romantic Fondamenta della Sensa and the famous campo dei Mori with the statues of the Moors from which it takes its name, will lead you to one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Venice, the church of Madonna dell'Orto: it is well worth a visit for its paintings, some of which where painted by Tintoretto, who lived nearby.
Fondamenta della Misericordia continues west on fondamenta degli Ormesini: cross the iron bridge and reach the campo del Ghetto nuovo, in the heart of the ancient Jewish settlement, with its five sinagogues or scholae that are now open to visitors as part of the Jewish Museum.
Some may wish to try their fortune at Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, seat of Casinò municipale, a mere 5 minutes away. In the immediate surroundings the celebrated Ca’ d’Oro with its gallery awaits art lovers.
From campo Santa Sofia, again at a walking distance, a gondola will take you to the opposite bank of the Grand Canal with the busy Rialto market and the Gothic revival Pescheria, the portico under which fresh fish is sold.
If you choose to walk along through campo dei santi Apostoli you will reach the church di Santa Maria dei Miracoli, an outstanding instance of early Venetian Renaissance, and campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, with its superb Gothic church, the Scuola Grande di San Marco and the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, Verrocchio's masterpiece.

This is an outstanding place!
The best apartment we have rented to date: clean, beautiful, spacious, and greatly situated, equipped with all the modern amenities.
It has plenty of room for 4 people. The decor is tasteful. It is an area of Venice that is not too overrun with tourists, but still very well served by nearby restaurants, and close enough to walk to the main attractions and the railway station.
Perhaps best of all, there is a discount supermarket mere steps away (very cheap), so you can save money on food, and you see lots of locals walking around going about their regular business.
Also, the renters live next door, so it is easy to get the keys, and they are very nice and knowledgeable people!
Trust me, you can't go wrong with Palazzo Longo.
