Less bustling than Florence or Pisa, Lucca sits snug within its massive medieval walls, the town within a maze of ancient streets, Renaissance churches, grand palazzi, good shops and excellent restaurants. An enjoyable day can be spent waling the 4 km circuit of the walls ... so deep are they that they are topped by parks and gardens, and are very popular with joggers, cyclists and sightseers. And when you descend to the town within, you'll find pedestrians and cyclists again take precedence over the motor car - this is a lovely town to stroll, enjoy and relax. Watching over Lucca from above, from one of the towers, one can enjoy an enchanting panorama over the red roofs, with lots of green and the summits of the Apuan Alps in the background.
