Vacation Rental Description
Villa Gelsi is a 200 year old farmhouse which we have completely restored to provide comfortable accommodation for up to 11 guests. It takes its name from the majestic mulberry trees that grace the grounds around the house, which is approached along a private track leading up a hillside and through a wooded archway formed by the trees of a small copse. The track ends in a large car park area to the north-eastern end of the house.
The ground floor consists of an entrance hall leading to a dining room, which in turn leads into a large living room - complete with a preserved feeding trough! (the ground floor was originally home to farm animals). Off the living room is a smaller TV room with a 32" flat panel TV, satellite, DVD player, hi-fi unit and a double sofa-bed. Also on the ground floor are a large kitchen with fridge/freezer, electric oven, gas hob, double sink, and dishwasher, and a shower room with wash basin and toilet, which doubles a laundry room - a common feature in Italian country houses. Full laundry facilities include a sink, automatic washing machine, ironing board and iron. The main bathroom on the first floor has a shower, wash basin, roll-top cast iron bath, toilet and bidet. All the showers have thermostatically controlled mixer taps.
Also on the first floor is a second living room, a double bedroom with king-sized four-poster bed (bedroom 1), a twin-bedded room (bedroom 2), a second double room with a king-sized bed, a dressing room with an additional single daybed, and an en-suite bathroom (bedroom 3). Finally, there’s another twin-bedded room (bedroom 4). All the bedrooms are air-conditioned and have commanding views over the local countryside. The house is equipped with double sets of bed linen and towels, plus a supply of additional towels for pool use (depending on the time of year).
Outside there is a 12m x 6m pool with steps and a diving board at one end, and walk-in steps at the other end. A solar shower located by the pool provides ample hot water during the summer months.
The property is about 50 minutes drive from Ancona airport, and is situated in approximately 1.5 acres surrounded by farmed fields – some of which will be found glowing with sunflowers in July. Villa Gelsi is approached via a 'white’ road or ‘strada bianca' (i.e. not tarmac, but common in rural Italy), and is about a quarter of a mile from the nearest minor tarmac road. Complete privacy and tranquillity are just two of the delights of Villa Gelsi.
The neighbouring countryside is dotted with delightful medieval hill-top villages. The two local towns - San Lorenzo in Campo and Pergola - a few minutes drive away, are as yet untouched by tourism. Both have bustling colourful weekly local markets plus local stores, and supermarkets.
The beaches are renowned for their cleanliness, and you can drive down to the sea and the pebble beaches of peaceful Marotta, with its favoured fish restaurants overlooking the Adriatic sea, or the broad, sandy, well organized beaches at Senigallia and Fano in about 40 – 45 minutes. Here, in the medieval town centres, you can enjoy an ‘aperitivo’ followed by sophisticated shopping and an opportunity to discover the delights of their stylish restaurants or pizzerie. Later, the many delicious Italian ice cream bars are difficult to resist.
One of the greatest pleasures for us is that this area of Italy is not really on the tourist map. We recommend a good Italian pocket dictionary - which we always carry with us!
The house is looked after by Hans, an English/Italian speaking Dutchman who decided some while ago that there was a better life for him and his family to lead in Le Marche rather than his native Holland. He lives in the area, and manages all the letting logistics, including cleaning, washing, and maintenance, and is on hand to help out as and when required.
