Bergamo is a medieval walled city built as an enclave of the Venetian Republic. The town is divided between the upper town, walled and beautiful and the more modern lower town, with a thriving shopping district. The surrounding mountains offer a cool respite from the summer sun. Zambla Alta is at 1200m, set in the centre of the national park, nice and cool in the summer and covered in snow in the winter. The apartment is located in the village with shops, bars restaurants and a doctor. The area is also famous for the local cheese and alcohol production and you can buy the cheese directly from the farmer and the 'amaro' and 'grappa' from the bar. A bus service runs regularly to Bergamo and Milan. In winter the roads are always kept clean and access is not a problem.
