Dolceacqua is a charming and romantic medieval village situated in the Nervia Valley. The original old village is divided by the Nervia river connected by the elegant old “donkey back” bridge, a masterpiece of architecture uniting “Il Borgo with La Terra”, as the two sides are named. Above the bridge the village is dominated by the Doria Castle, built in the 12th century and accessed through a dense network of steep streets known locally as “caruggi”. From its rocky location visitors can enjoy a superb view of the old village and surrounding valley, characteristically terraced for cultivation of olives, grapes and local species of flora and fauna. The splendid colours of the landscape form the basis for the sweetness with flavours of the village products, for example Rossese di Dolceacqua, a red wine loved by Popes and Emperors. The ultimate refuge to relax and relive time spent in harmony with nature, Dolceacqua is also a great place to begin excursions or more lively activities.
