According to some local scholars Racale was founded around the eleventh century by a group of settlers who fled
from their city, Eraclea on the Black Sea, and settled in these places, according to others, the foundation of Racale
is due to a certain Eraclio that this provision was in the territory by the Roman Augustus after
the Roman conquest of Salento, a proposition supported it from the city similar to the Roman Empire.
After the repeated invasions, under the dominion of the Normans, the country began a continuous evolution
transforming itself from a small village in a town square, surrounded by high walls that you could
accessed by two doors.
Many were the feudal lords who succeeded one another over the centuries, from Bonsecolo in the twelfth century, the Ptolemies, in Guevara,
De Franchise to the feud, and finally through it to Basurto.
In 1743 Racale, like other areas of the Salento, was struck by a terrible earthquake, many monuments were
destroyed, including the ancient parish church which was rebuilt in 1756.
