Nardò is near the sea resort of Santa Caterina and Porto Selvaggio, a natural reserve containing a large pine wood along the sea and a small splendid cove which can be reached only walking down through the wood or from the sea. In the same area pre-historic remains can be found, the most important are in the Uluzzo Bay, which has given the name to the Uluzzian period in the Upper Paleolithic. Nardò is an ancient town very rich in churches, palaces and historical buildings of different architectural periods, especially baroque. It's also a modern town, with refined shops and boutiques, supermarkets, cinema, theatre, pharmacies, hospital, post offices, etc.) Very important are the celebrations of the "Taranta Nights”, in which ancient rites evoke the spell caused by spyder bites, during which people affected by Tarantism danced frantically under a trance. Drama and ballet are performed in the theatres in Nardò, Gallipoli and Lecce.
