Abruzzo rivals Umbria and Tuscany for spectacular mountain scenery, medieval hilltop villages and historical sites, yet is largely undiscovered by tourists. Set in the Majella National Park the area is a walkers' paradise with several walks straight from the village. The excellent ski resort of Roccaraso is an easy 40 minute drive away as are the Pescara beaches.
Many local villages have their own picturesque castles and organise food and music festivals during the summer.
The nearby town of Sulmona is famous for its ‘confetti’and also hosts an amazing medieval jousting tournament at the end of July. It is a wonderful town to explore on foot with its museums, shops, restaurants and bars.
Other excursions include the water park, the animal sanctuary and wolf museum near Popoli, the mountain lake of Scanno, the underground caves of Stiffe, and the incredible Castrovalva, which inspired the drawings of Escher.
