Lying off the coast of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry and accessible from the mainland by ferry from Reenard Point or road bridge at Portmagee, Knightstown is the main village on Valentia Island. The Island is renowned for its incredible 'Fogher' sea cliffs which rise up from the Atlantic Ocean on the north side of the Island. A good selection of Irish pubs, restaurants, shops and entertainment can all be found in this lively town, which is also the departure point for sightseeing boat trips and fishing trips. The fascinating subtropical gardens at nearby Glanleam House offer a unique day out for the family. Valentia Island is home to approximately 650 residents, and as one of the westernmost inhabited sites in Europe, it was the site of the first permanent communications link between Europe and the United States.
