Kilrush is an historic coastal town, and was once an important Shannon port which is today home to a modern Marina and Heritage Centre. One of the listed Heritage Towns of Ireland, Kilrush is located near the mouth of the River Shannon in the south-west of County Clare. Regular boat trips run from the marina and take visitors round the beautiful waters of the Shannon Estuary, with its pretty riverside towns and villages and population of bottle-nosed dolphins. Or take a ferry to the nearby 6th century monastic island - Scattery Island – which features a unique 10th century round tower and the ruins of several churches. Kilrush offers a good selection of supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and an 18 hole golf course. The lively seaside resort of Kilkee is nine miles distant, and the town offers a horse-shoe bay, 18-hole golf course, pubs, eateries, and scenic walking routes. Kilkee is the starting point for the wonderful coastal scenery of the Loop Head Drive which runs along the rug
