Vacation Rental Description
Built 20 years ago by ourselves. We found the site, and sat there fascinated by the coming and going boats and people, the distant islands changing colour with the time of day, and the dolphins in the bay. Since then we have come back every year, bringing bits and pieces from home. So this is not a sterile holiday home, but our second home, with spare wellies and raincoats, as well as the sattellite tv, 2 pairs of binoculars and 2telescopes. There is enough cutlery for about 20, as we've had some super parties here.
We live outside all the time, the terraces all have shade, as well as sunshine. The garden is full of fruit trees, peaches, nectarines, plums, pomegranites, walnuts, oranges, lemons, satsumas, vines etc. The gardeners (a lovely couple from Hastings) have fresh salads there for you to pick. There are buckets and spades, lifejackets, beach mats and umbrellas, a couple of bikes (which may need some attention), some chisels for woodcarving, as well as 2 charcoal barbecues. The outside shower is a delight on a hot day, and the hammocks are just the job for an afternoon snooze.
The upper storey is organised so that it can be independant of the downstairs, as it has a back door leading onto the back terrace. The ceilings upstairs are very high, so that even without the air conditioning, it never gets too hot.
There is an authentic Greek hotel just 200yds up the lane, with a swimming pool, and a wonderful cook, and home made wine. The tavernas and supermarkets are easily reached on foot. Olive groves are all round the house, and the footpath to the "Old Village" goes past the house, making that a very enjoyable 20 minute stroll.

Having used the house for ourselves for 20 years, it has many non-standard facilities. There are original paintings on the walls, sculptures scattered about. The "beach things cupboard" has several lifejackets, including one for a youngster, there are buckets and spades, beach mats and umbrellas, (some might be the worse for wear!). There are two bicycles, which probably need the tyres blowing up, but there are pumps, a puncture repair kit etc etc. There are 2 binoculars and 2 telescopes to help you watch the harbour with all the people and boats coming and going, the dolphins, and the changing light on the little islands further away.
Sitting on the edge of the escarpment around the village, we get a cooling breeze when the people lower down are too hot, but we are close enough to the village to happily walk to the retaurants or shops, and not need a car. The nearby hotel has a heated pool, no charge, but buy a drink or meal.

Alonissos is a very undeveloped island, it is green, due to the winter rains, and even gets some snow occasionally. The northern half is mediterranean scrub, the southern half has a lot of pine forest, with some cultivated areas. So the main leisure interest is swimming from the many beaches, and walking, with or without a guide. Mountain bikes can be hired in Patitiri. Guided walks are available from the harbour.
In Stena Valla, a yatching village 6 miles up the east coast, is a scuba-diving/kayak hiring/climbing/hiking activity centre.
The Sporades Marine Park extends all around Alonissos, with restrictions on waterskiing, harpoon fishing, and we have some of the cleanest water in the meditteraenean.
There are 2 discos, and 2 night clubs, all sound proofed. The tavernas often have local musicians.
Excursion boats go to neighbouring islands, and small boats and middle sized yachts with captain can be hired.
Travel Options
- Nearest Airport : Skiathos at 30 kilometers distance;
- Nearest Train Station : Volos at 100 kilometers distance
- Nearest Town : Patitiri at 0.5 kilometers distance
- Travel Info: Most people come by charter flight to Skiathos,then taxi to the port, then hydrofoil or ferry to Patitiri, the port of Alonissos. But you can come first to Athens or Thessaloniki and then get a bus or train to Volos or Agios Konstantinos, then a hydrofoil, but it adds almost a day onto the travelling time.
Alonissos is the furthest island in the group, and the least sophisticated, the most old-fashioned!
