Rethymno is Crete’s third largest town, conveniently placed in the middle of the north coast between Irakleio and Chania, making it an ideal base to explore the island, just a forty minute drive to the south coast. 
Rethymno boasts having the largest Venetian fortress on the island and the old town has a colourful mix of architecture which has basically remained intact since the Renaissance, with its beautifully decorated piazzas and superb fountains. 
An evening stroll through the old town’s narrow lanes will be an unforgettable experience.  
 
Prines lies 6.5 km W-SW from Rethymno town, making it a perfect location to see the most of this amazing island. It boasts eight churches (you will need a local guide to find all eight) the church of St. Nikolaos dates from the 13th century. 
 
Prines has two village shops; a butcher and a traditional taverna; Atsipopoulo a mere 1.5 km away, also has two supermarkets, fish monger, bakery, pharmacy, DVD rental and two tavernas.
