Petra is the perfect base for those wanting to relax in the quiet countryside or the busier beaches of Kalyves and Almerida (10mins) and for those wanting a more energetic holiday it is ideal for walkers and cyclists with many beautiful and interesting places to see around the immediate and surrounding area. 
3min Drive into the village of Stylos are small shops for everyday provisions and local tavernas. The busier beachfront and village of Kalives (10mins away) the nearest "largest" town has chemist, bakery, veg shops, banks, post office, numerous tavernas and cafes, mini-markets and two small beaches. Chania (30 mins away) -(a bustling Venetian harbour) - Scuba diving, boat trips, Saturday morning market, banks and much,much more. Further afield, a water park at Limnoupolis and a visit to Kournas Lake and Samaria Gorge are a must. All too much for one visit to Crete. You will feel the need to come back again to this beautiful region.
