MALEME, is a historical village, from the post Minoan period, on the coast of the northern site of west Crete, with approx. 800 inhabitants. It lies on small hills in the greenest region of Crete, surrounded by olive trees, orange trees and wine yards and offers to the gourmets the famous olive oil, the excellent thyme honey and the homemade Cretan wines.The visitor will enjoy the beautiful sea, the majestic view on the 2500 m “white mountains”, the amazing natural beauty of the region, the gorges, the walking on E4 alpin paths as well as the archaeological places Kydonia, Polyrhynia and Falasarna, the post Minoan tomb (all artefacts found here are displayed in the archaeological museum of Chania, in the old Venetian city), and the memorial and the graves of the fallen German troops during 2nd WW. Maleme is remembered mostly for the fierce fighting, that took place here during the German assault on Crete in 1941. The battle of Crete is a worldwide symbol of struggle for freedom.
