Vaucluse is like Tuscany because that is an image strong in people's minds; gentle rolling hills, vineyards, olive trees, sunflowers, stone and terracotta village houses
Faucon has 350 people, a church, a school, a restaurant, a new library, the Mairie's office, a fountain, a crumbling lavoir. The quietness is broken by the ringing of the church bells, twice in quick succession counting out the hour, and a single gong for the half hour.
Vaison la Romaine has a street block of smart pavement cafés, restaurants and bars. Vaison, has a 'mediaeval' centre at its highest point - dating from the 12th century, worth the long walk up across the 2000 year old single span roman-gallo bridge; and excavated roman ruins a public building, wealthy family villa and a theatre seating 4000 still used today, built in 20AD.
Tuesday morning is the main market, the streets fill with stalls.

Bike riding Hire a bike, daily, weekly, try the cycle shops (one in town, one on the edge of town). We prefer the Peugot dealer over near the Intermarche on the way to Faucon. It is in a complex of large stores, next to the SAS Sports Loisirs du Bru Sq, just off a large roundabout. Very helpful shop owners. Buy a bike route booklet (Parcours Cyclo Touristiques) from the main shop under the tourist office in Vaison and head out on a self guided tour.
Walking There is an excellent guide, distances, difficulty graded, again from the main shop under the tourist office in Vaison (Le Pays du Ventoux … a pied). Walking around Faucon itself and out into the fields and nearby villages is also most enjoyable.
There is a large stream near Veaux - find Mollans-s-Ouveze (D5), head for Pas du Ventoux (D40), and then for Veaux (D40a). Stop at the bridge before you get to Veaux, walk up or down stream. Water is icy, swim, walk, picnic.
