Substantial home in Provencal style, with large swimming pool, very private on 1.2 acres yet only 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of Lorgues.
The house is much lived-in and though rustic in style it has the amenities for a most comfortable holiday, any time of year. It has 4 patios/terraces, a lovely large main living/dining area with open fireplace, piano-room/study, additional room or reception, entrance hall, leading to a cloakroom and shower stall, and a large and very complete kitchen. Down a half-level are 3 more double bedrooms (of which 2 are with en-suite bath/shower rooms), and access to the laundry room via the rear patio.
Lorgues is a beautiful medieval town with considerable portions of its 13th century wall still standing, and retains its provencal essence. On Tuesday mornings it features a traditional market on its main streets, and Thursday is smaller market day featuring local produce and food only. The town has 3 banks several pharmacies, supermarkets, garages and innumerable café-terraces, bakeries and other shops and of course restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Chez Bruno on the Route des Arcs (reservations necessary), which is famous for its truffle-based set meals.
15 minutes taxi ride from the train station (Les Arcs Draguignan), which is 8hrs 30 minutes from London St. Pancras (Eurostar/TGV changing at Lille) or 4hrs15 min.from Paris Gare de Lyon (TGV)
Lorgues is in the middle-Var area of Provence, within about one hour's drive from either Nice or Toulon/Hyeres airports and 1hour 20 minutes from Marseille/Marignane airport. The area is favoured for its climate and the walking, horse-back riding and cycling opportunities, as well as traditional and cultural tourism.
The Cistercian Abbey of Le Thoronet and many historic villages are in the vicinity; also the standard of local wine-making has risen so much over the past 30 years that the wineries are well worth viisiting (Chateau Roubine, Chateau de Berrne, Chateau l’Arnaude to name but a few nearby), though their wines are commanding ever-increasing prices.
Should you tire of the pool, the lake at Carces is 25 minutes by car, or a 35 minute drive brings you to the sand beach at Sainte Maxime, while Saint Tropez is another 10 km. by road but in mid summer it is advisable to park in Ste Maxime and take the passenger ferry across into the heart of St. Tropez harbour.
Less than 1 hour in the direction of the Alps lie the Gorges du Verdon (aka French Grand Canyon), and Moustiers-Ste. Marie on Lac de Sainte Croix, the largest lake in Provence, offering swimming, walking, sailing, white water rafting, kayaking and windsurfing, as well as the truly worthwhile traditional pottery exhibits and shops in Moustiers.
There are more than a dozen golf courses within an hour’s drive, also the Cagnes-sur mer race-track and the gambling Casinos in Nice, Cannes, Saint Raphael and even Sainte Maxime, while the Isola 2000 and Auron ski-resorts are 2 hours away, the Italian border at Ventimiglia 1hr 40 minutes away, Cannes & Antibes are within 50 minutes and Frejus/Saint Raphael 35 minutes.
