Vacation Rental Description
As you step inside this 400 year-old 'maison de maitre' or ‘Master’s House’ onto the flagstone floors, 'La Maison du Faiencier' exudes a sense of history. From the vaulted hall you enter a stylish living/dining room, separated by an archway from the exceptionally well-equipped kitchen.
Both, look on to and have access to a charming courtyard (ideal outdoor eating area) which leads into the 350 m2 walled garden. There you can sit under the shade of the vines and fruit trees or take a dip in the pool (7mx3m).
Throughout the house the emphases is on quality and luxury with all the original features having been carefully restored. Each bedroom is light and airy, tastefully decorated with original materials, and with its own private bathroom.
Rooms can be made up with large single or super-king-sized double beds.
The village of Varages has been famous over the last three centuries for its painted earthenware (faience), It is an 'undiscovered' village situated in the Haut Var, 20 minutes drive north of the A8 motorway and the same distance from the spectacular lakes of the 'Gorges du Verdon', the deepest river gorge in Europe. The village is just over an hour's drive from Marseille and Toulon airports and slightly more from Nice and Nimes airports. It is 50 mins drive from Aix-en-Provence said to be the most beautiful city in Europe.
With the locals boasting '300 days of sun a year', La Maison du Faiencier is a special place to come any time of the year. Home, in the past, to Masters of earthenware and porcelain (faience), you'll be experiencing a piece of history in comfortable surroundings, with all the amenities on your doorstep. The added bonus is that this little bit of Provence, though exceptionally beautiful, is largely 'undiscovered'.
The nearest supermarket is 10 mins away. The house is situated on the main square, right in the heart of a small but active village. Across the square, you'll find the local, (very ‘French’) boulangerie, boucherie, cafe and restaurant.

There are five bedrooms (22 to 36 m2) each equipped with two large single beds which are designed to make up a super-king-size double. Two of the rooms have a communicating door; ideal for parents with young children. There are 2 cots.
Four of the rooms have an en-suite walk-in shower, one a roll-top bath and shower unit. Air conditioning is installed in the two largest bedrooms.
All the shower rooms are fitted with solid brass taps (some of the showers with large 'sunflower' heads) and the hand basins are individually made by the village 'faiencier' (fine potter).
Guests are greeted by the house owner who shows them around the property. There's a welcome fruit bowl on the dinning room table, a bottle of local wine and a pot of local figue jam in the fridge and a carefully prepared 'visitors pack' with recommendations for sightseeing, activities, the local markets and dining out. This is an excellent place, in particular, for climbing, cycling and walking, given its proximity to the Gorge du Verdon (Europe's deepest river canyon) and its lesser known lower gorges and lakes. Panoramic views are in abundance. The lavender plains are also near-by, which are so worth seeing when in full flower June/July. Local markets take place almost every day of the week in the area and there are plenty of delightful medieval, hill-top villages to explore.
There are beautiful beaches to enjoy and swimming at the near-by lakes and the Mediterranean 'cote d'azur' is just an hour's drive away.
