Bed and breakfast is offered in an old traditional railway hotel situated on the outskirts of the historic bourg of Moncontour in the Vienne departement of Poitou Charentes, just 10 minutes walk to the local shops, bar and restaurant. The village has an X1th century tower and there are picturesque walks along the meandering river Dive to neighbouring villages. It is also 10 minutes walk to the leisure beach and lake which is open in the summer months for swimming, boating and teleski. 
 
The theme park of Futuroscope is around 45 km away at Poitiers, where there is an airport and a railway station with direct TGV access to Paris and the south of France. The market towns of Loudun, Thouars, Mirebeau and Richlieu are about 20 minutes drive away, whilst the chateaux of Saumur and Chinon in the Loire valley are only around 40 minutes drive. It is about 2 hours drive to the seaside port of La Rochelle and some four hours south of the channel port of Le Havre. 
 
The area is very much an agricultural one, with fields of sunflowers, Charentais melon, corn and maize, with fresh local fruit and vegetables available at the many local markets. Throughout the year there are many local festivals annd celebrations to experience, ranging from donkey racing at the next village to music festivals in Moncontour annd at the chateau in nearby Oiron, and most weekends from April to September vide grenier/attic sales are held by each village in turn. 
 
A warm English welcome is extended to our guests and we hope you will enjoy a comfortable and relaxing stay in our home. There are tea and coffee makinng facilities in the rooms, annd English television is installed in most of the rooms. 
 
The green bedroom has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom with shower over the bath 
 
The yellow room also has a double bed but with an en-suite shower room. 
 
The terracotta room has twin beds and a partitioned en-suite with walk in shower cubicle. 
 
There are two further "flexible" rooms available - single, twin or double as required. A child's cot is also available on request. 
 
Guests can dine with the family in the large dining/sitting room, or (weather permitting) outside in the sunshine. Although under chambres d'hotes regulations we are not allowed to offer a choice of menu, we are alwayys happy to try and cater for specific requirements/likes/dislikes/suggestions. 
 
Wherever possible we try to ensure that your stay in Moncontour is an interesting and enjoyable one, and are happy to help with househunting and childminding etc. if required.

During the summer months the lake at Moncontour is a lovely place to relax on the beach or have a gentle swim, followed by a drink or meal at the auberge, or for the more energetic there is the exo-park teleski suitable for both the beginner and the expert.  
 
Moncontour village is a typical bourg with interesting houses, an X1th century tower which can be seen for miles away, a village shop, chemist, post office, bakery, a bar and a restaurant.

We have stayed here several times and have always had a warm welcome. The bedrooms are roomy, clean and fresh in the French style. The food is very good and plentiful. Lovely relaxed atmosphere.

All-in-all excellent value for money with a warm and friendly service. Thoroughly recommend

What a wonderful holiday at this delightful B&B in the heart of France. Moncontour is a cute little town, the people are all friendly and the walkabouts are most relaxing. I spent a month here and loved every minute of it. Ms. Elsey is a fabulous hostess and wonderful cook! You will never go hungry here - It is French country living in a beautiful location. The history alone of this area is fascinating. Stay one night, stay a bunch of nights at this adorable train hotel on the hill. I had a great time here and wouldn't hesitate to return for another month, maybe two or three if Jane could stand me that long!
