Vacation Rental Description
It is said that Poitou-Charentes has more days of sunshine than anywhere in France with the exception of the Cote D'Azur. Cognac, which is our nearest town, sits on the Charente River and is the home of the brandy distilleries. It is a beautiful unspoilt part of France close to the beaches at Royan (45 minutes) and La Rochelle (1 hour 15 minutes) as well as the wonderfully classy and pretty Ile de Re. The beaches are spectacular - long and wide and empty. There are regular markets in all the nearby towns and villages and Cognac has an impressive covered market which is open every day except Monday.
Rocking Horse House is an incredibly pretty French farmhouse which sits in a walled courtyard with a pomegranate tree and wysteria clad walls. It was built over 200 years ago in typical cream Charentais stone with duck egg blue shutters. Although in the midst of the countryside we are close to the town of Cognac in the Charente.
It is hard to imagine a more peaceful place. It looks out over lovely views of fields and trees amd the only noise is the birdsong and the occasional cockerel. Up until now the house has been used exclusively by my family and therefore everything in it has been bought with their comfort in mind.
There are four double bedrooms (two can be twins), three in the main house with a bathroom and a wet room and one in the cottage where there is also a small sitting area with day bed, galley kitchen and a shower room and loo. The cottage which sits by the pool is a most romantic addition to the house. In the main house downstairs are two reception rooms, one is used as a study and has wifi, the other is the sitting room with a piano, DVD and TV with all freeview channels. There are many DVDs and books on the shelves. The kitchen I hope has everything that you would expect.
In the drawing room and the hall are open fires with a room full of logs outside for our guests to use in the winter.Down the road is a (free) tennis court and there is an excellent golf course (St Brice at Cognac) nearby.
This is a magical place with wonderful sunsets and glorious clear night skies.
Cognac can be reached within around 15 minutes and is, of course, renowned for the brandy maturing in cellars on the banks of the Charente and produced by the vineyards which dominate the surrounding rolling countryside. There are a good selection of restaurants in the town, our favourites being ‘La Courtine’ but for a special occasion the area boasts a Michelin starred restaurant, La Ribaudière http://www.laribaudiere.com/accueil.html , set on the banks of the Charente in Bourg Charente, between Cognac and Jarnac.
There are organised trips available around many of the Cognac houses. One of the most popular is the Hennessey visit which can be organised at the visitor centre located at the quayside by the Charente in Cognac. Another favourite is the Otard tour of the Chateau Francois Premier – the 15th century fortified chateau situated by the river in Cognac and the birthplace of King Francois 1st.
Boats can be hired in Cognac or, for a relaxing 90 minute discovery of the Charente we recommend the ‘Dame Jeanne’, a traditional flat bottomed wooden barge which departs regularly from the quayside in Cognac. Naturally for a town of its size, Cognac has a selection of large supermarkets and hypermarkets, the largest of which is Auchan located on the ring road around Cognac towards Saintes. There is also a large covered market in the centre of town which is open every morning except Monday.
All in all this is a glorious undiscovered part of France with empty roads and fields of sunflowers and vineyards. A hidden jewel.

There are several excellent golf courses nearby including Cognac, Angouleme and Saintes.
The beaches of the Cote Sauvage are 45 minutes away and are empty, long and wide.
Tennis is a short walk from the house in a pretty picnic area by a stream - in addition there are 3 excellent clay courts at our nearest town (Segonzac) which is 5 minutes away.
Nearby is a Michelin starred restaurant but if you want something a little less exotic then the square in Cognac is surrounded by pretty bars and cafes.
There are 3 bicycles at the property which we would be happy for you to use - particularly useful for going to ge the fresh bread and croissant in the morning.
In the local village is an equestrian centre with magnificent rides available around the vineyards.
There is a large zoo - details of which are included along with other activities in our website www.rockinghorsehouse.co.uk
