An ideal family holiday spot
Review Submitted: October 10, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We had agreed as a family that we'd like to go away together as part of my "significant" birthday celebrations. I booked Le Grand Bois and we were delighted to find a beautiful, well equipped and very well maintained traditional property in a huge, very child friendly garden with walled and gated pool. Linda & Ian, the owners, made us very welcome and made sure we felt we could contact them at any time during our stay with any queries whatsoever. In fact, one of our party did need to attend A&E and Linda very kindly went along to ensure our lack of detailed French didn't cause difficulies in communications - that made such a difference and gave us the confidence to know that the problem had been thoroughly investigated and treated.
14 of us aged from 6 weeks to 62 years had the space and comfort to enjoy our holiday as we each wished. A lovely area for walking and only a short drive to towns and shops. Very well placed for good days out to places like Cognac, Brantome etc with their historic centres and wide variety of restaurants.
We had a wonderful holiday and would heartily recommend Le Grand Bois. We did worry somewhat when a couple came to the adjoining small property in case we were too noisy but they were very friendly and didn't seem too disturbed by our noisy family.
There was plenty of room to find a quiet and shady place in the garden for anyone wanting their own bit of peace and quiet and the pool was large enough for everyone to enjoy swimming, splashing etc - one of our grandchildren learned to swim whilst we were there so another cause for celebration.
I can't imagine anyone not enjoying a holiday in this super place.

La Petite Grange
Review Submitted: September 10, 2010 Date of Stay: June 2010
We spent a week here in June 2010 and found both the level of accomodation and the hospitality of Iain and Linda to be amazing. We normally visit France later in the year and unfortunately we had a lot of rain and clouds - we even used the log burner on a couple of evenings. This didn't stop us having a great holiday as there are lots of great places to see and it is a pleasure to drive around the quiet country roads in this area. The Dordoyne is not far with its gorgeous villages and scenery and the area is littered with Chateaux in various states of repair.
Unless you are luckier with the weather (It is generally very warm and sunny all summer) and plan to enjoy the lovely gardens and pool you will need a car to get out an about as this is a very rural area with the nearest shops and supermarkets about 10K away. The small gite is very spacious, comfortable and well equipped and we got the "5 euro tour" of the big house which looks fantastic for a large group. We also spent some time with our hosts who are great company - we will definitely return.

magical family holiday
Review Submitted: January 9, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2009
our entire family 12 of us ranging in age from 1 to 64 enjoyed this wonderful property . the accomodation is superb spacious modern(the bathrooms are a joy)every thing hs been thought about and provided from stairgate ,highchairs, cots, games and even a boat for the pool.the pool is excellent ,gated for safety and is kept spotlessly clean by linda. linda and ian plus there family go out of there way to make sure you enjoy your holiday, nothing is too much trouble. the gite is in a lovely rural setting with safe and easy walking with plenty to see from vinyards(one very nearby to taste and purchase from ,we can recommend all the wines!) to the hamlet with ducks, tractors(we have a grandson obsessed with them) there are plenty of places farther afield for siteseeing trips to the beach, visits to congnac, chateaux the list goes on.we were happy to spend a lot of time at the gite as the weather was fantastic and the pool and lovely garden with lots of room for energitic adults and children but with shade and quiet spots for the more senior. some of our party flew from bristol to bordeaux and as the airport is about an hour and a half away this worked out well.the town of barbezieu is only 6 miles away and has 3 supermarkets bakeries patisseries ,restaurants, banks, etc.we all had a fantastic holiday at this supeb gite it is of 5 star standard with owners to match.we will certainly be returning.

The Gites are very well furnished, comfortable and in an excellent location. As our family is forever growing we were looking for somewhere that could accommodate all 16 of us and the dogs! We occupied the two gites for two weeks in August 2007 the weather wasn’t particularly good, but there was still plenty for everyone to enjoy. During the thunderstorms there was plenty of space to sit quietly reading a book, play games, watch the telly even play indoor table tennis and when the weather was dry we enjoyed garden games or time by the pool.
There is plenty of space to walk and play with the dogs and some lovely places to visit close by.
Ian & Linda are very friendly owners who provide an excellent service. A fantastic holiday had by all.

Le Grand Bois Gites

Review Submitted: June 12, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
It was around five years ago when we first saw the property known as Le Grand Bois. A typically old French farmhouse with numerous barns and outbuildings all set around an internal courtyard which was home to two adopted, feral and very untouchable cats. Linda and Ian had owned the property for about two years at that stage and had sympathetically converted the farmhouse into a modern home for themselves with all creature comforts without losing the French style of architecture and internal ambience.
The barns and outbuildings had yet to be converted into gites, and from their condition at the time, it seemed a daunting if not impossible task. However, having recently seen the results of their labours, Linda and Ian should now be justly proud of their efforts in providing luxury accommodation for their guests in traditional French style.
With their new roof structures completed, the gites are spotlessly clean, very nicely furnished with comfortable beds, well-fitted bathrooms and kitchens and both have wood-burning stoves for those chilly evenings. Outside there are paved terraces with tables and seating to go with the barbecues provided for alfresco dining on the warmer sunny evenings. A wellcome pack of basic foods for breakfast and the bottle of wine on the table adds the finishing touch.
On entering their own farmhouse, it didn’t escape our notice that the feral cats had now made themselves at home as well on their own individual blankets and just love being made a fuss of, obviously, old barns are not the only things that have been converted.
There is a beautiful swimming pool in a sunny position for guests, all surrounded by an orchard and open fields, offering a very peaceful country setting. Nearby towns have several supermarkets for provisions, along with local shops and restaurants. A very relaxing spot to get away from things, with the back-up of Linda and Ian on the premises to help out with anything you need and advice on visiting the nearby towns and attractions. Well worth a visit.

Annie and I have had a truly splendid 2 week break here at your lovely petit gite. We needed to totally relax and have managed to do so through both the wonderful surroundings of the countryside and the gorgeous conversion that Ian and Linda have created. You are the perfect hosts and have been very helpful on numerous occassions. Many, many thanks.

This is our third visit to Linda and Ian and once again we have had a fabulous time with the children being a little bit older, they thouroughly enjoyed the pool and open area surrounding the gites. Glad to see that Linda can still give me a run for my money for chatting (with Justina close at our heels!) Hopefully see you next year with my mum and Justins' dad in the dig gite. Thanks again.

Lovely cosy "La Petite Grange" made a super base for touring around the area and getting to know the "Real France". Many thanks to Ian and LInda for their kindness.

The nicest gite we have stayed at in our many trips to France. Although we were unlucky weather wise, we had a brilliant break in this beautiful region. Ian and Linda were grat hosts and we enjoyed a wine or two together ! Hope to return soon and will be singing your praises when we get home.

Excellent gite, great hosts, lovely neighbours, a most relaxing, stress-free week! Really enjoyed your company, advice and help. Will certainly recommend. A Bientot !
A few words about ourselves. We came to live in the Charente, by the way, the second sunniest area of France next to the Cote d'Azur, with our two children in 2001. We fell for a small farmstead with a lovely courtyard and a couple of barns which is now our home and two very busy gites. With Ians' architectural background, we have carefully renovated to keep the Charentaise look with many stone walls and oak beams whilst providing all the comforts and amenities that you would expect. Ian now works on lots of other projects from small extensions to obtaining full building permits for other like minded people who love "La Vie Francaise", whilst I run the gites. Our children are still with us and have settled well, with one still in education and the other gainfully employed.
You will always be made welcome here at Le Grand Bois, whether you are just passing on holiday or thinking of making the move yourselves !!
