Welcome to a rural B & B and 18th century Gite with openair pool enclosed by a mature walled garden.
Vacation Rental Description
Bienvenu to Le vieux Couvent located in the sleepy French village of Deviat surrounded by an idyllic landscape of vineyards, sunflowers and agriculture. You have two options for accommodation, these being 'Chambres d'hotes' in the main house and a beautiful stone 'Gite', both of which stand in an enclosed private garden. There is a 10 x 5 metre openair pool heated by the glorious Charentaise sunshine. The Charente is reportedly the second sunniest department in France so we would expect the weather to be fairly favourable for visitors.
There are 2 large, comfortable en-suite rooms for Bed & Breakfast both with tea & coffee making facilities. A 4 course evening meal "en famille" is available on request which includes wine and coffee, this is served in the dining room or on the terrace during the summer months. The evening meal is available to all guests whether staying in the house or gite.
The gite offers self catering accommodation with all home comforts supplied, there is also a terrace with BBQ and outside dining area. The garden is big enough for guests to play a game of boules or badmington, or relax with a book in a quiet corner. The pool area is fenced as required under French law and is supplied with loungers and parasols. We try to grow as many of the vegetables we may need and the fruit trees supply the crop necessary for eating fresh or producing jams and chutney.
The main house and cottage were originally constructed in 1762 and then the house had further building work in 1853. A small body of nun's lived here for many years administering to the locals spriritual and medical needs, hence it is know as the 'old convent'.
Please note that NO SMOKING is allowed in any of the buildings.
Facilities
The gite is fully furnished with one bedroom and shower room upstairs and the main living area on the ground floor. Many original features have been kept to retain the character of the cottage such as exposed stonework and beams. The bedroom has one double and one single bed with all linen provided including towels (not pool towels)these can be hired. The living area has two comfortable sofa's (1 is a sofabed) opposite the woodburning stove. This is an open plan layout which also includes the fully equipped kitchen and indoor dining space. The 2 en-suite guest rooms in the main house comprise of 1 double room and 1 triple with a double and sigle bed available, they both have seating provided plus tea/coffee making facility. We have a selection of indoor and outdoor games, plus a wide range books for a 'holiday read'.
Activities
The regions capital Angouleme is 30 minutes north of Deviat. This city is excellent to stroll around with a good selection of shops and restaurants. Boat trips on the Charente can be booked, details are available at the tourist office. You also have Theatres and large Exhibition Centre where plays, musical events and shows are performed. Man-made lakes with beaches are also easily accessed and the Atlantic coast is only an hours drive west. An hours drive south takes you to Bordeaux which is surrounded by some of the best wine producers in the region. If Cognac is your drink you can drive to the town of Cognac in approx 40 minutes and visit one of the producing houses.
Poitiers, a 90 minute drive north of us, you find Futurescope, a theme park with a diffenence and certainly worth a visit.
For nature lovers the birds of prey in the region are abundant and not a rare sight, as are wild boar and deer.

To confirm a booking in the gite a 20% non refundable deposit is required with the remaining amount to be paid no later than 7/8 weeks before arrival. Also £100.00 security/damage deposit is required at the time of your final payment which is refunded within 1 week of departure after a thorough inspection of the premises. Payment is by bank transfer to an English or French bank account. Bed and Breakfast guests are asked to pay in Euros at the end of their stay. We perfer that you pay in euros for the evening meal(21.50) per person (£19.50) Change over day for the gite is usually Saturday, but other days are also considered. There is a discount for weekly stays in the Chambres d'hotes please enquire for details
