Set in large, secluded gardens, this tastefully restored cottage offer top quality accommodation for anyone looking for a truly relaxing holiday. Close to the amenities of the attractive market town of St Jean d’Angely and ideally placed for exploring this beautiful region of the Charente Maritime our many guests have loved it here. 
 
Le Sapin (Pine Cottage) provides accommodation for 6 to 8 people and is furnished to a high standard. Downstairs is a large open plan living area (19ft by 26 ft) incorporating a well-equipped kitchen (cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, washing machine, dishwasher), dining area and comfortable seating with satellite TV, DVD and CD players. A good supply of books, CDs, DVDs and games is available for your use. 
 
Attractive open-tread wooden stairs lead up to 3 full-height bedrooms, one double and two twin, all with good quality beds made up with cotton bedding and with fitted wardrobes and bedside tables. The bathroom upstairs has a full-size bath with shower, w.c. and wash-hand basin. Downstairs there is an additional shower, w.c. and wash-hand basin. Two comfortable single bed settees and wardrobe space is available on the ground floor for additional flexibility. 
 
Fans are provided and heating is available for those cooler evenings, off-season. 
 
The gîte has two sets of double doors opening onto its own patio area with tables, chairs and barbeque – the perfect spot to sit and enjoy a meal prepared from the produce bought at the local markets or those hand-prepared meals from the charcuterie counter, so beloved of the French.  
 
The tranquil grounds of Les Grands Arbres extend to 5000m2, including attractive garden areas, an orchard, a large field and a parking area. There is also an open-plan barn with table tennis, table football and other outdoor games, swings, plus a variety of bikes are available for your use (please bring your own safety helmets). Top up your tan on the lovely sheltered terrace around the 10 x 5 metre heated swimming pool, with its sun loungers, tables and parasols. The pool is protected by a security railing. 
 
Please note that unfortunately pets are not invited and smoking is not allowed within the gîte.

For those of you with young families, we can provide a cot, highchair, baby bath, safety gate and a selection of toys suitable for babies and toddlers. The heated swimming pool, with its large sun terrace, loungers and parasols is available June to mid September and sometimes earlier, when the weather justifies it.

St Jean d'Angely, Saintes and Cognac are all within easy reach. St Jean d'Angely is a picturesque market town only ten minutes away, with swimming pool complex, river and lake and numerous cafes and restaurants. Saintes is a chic river town with pedestrian streets, a roman amphitheatre and a cultured air. Cognac is a charming and characterful town with an interesting produce market, jazz and blues festivals and a variety of cognac distilleries.  
 
For the children, the attractively laid out zoo outside Royan allows for a really close encounter with the animals and at the 'Valley of the Monkeys' at Romagne, south of Poitiers, you can stroll through a beautiful park and discover 30 different species of monkeys and watch them being fed. A short drive away, St Savinien sits on the Charente river and has its own lake where the children can ride on perfect miniatures of fishing boats, cross channel ferries and paddle steamers.

We fell in love with this property as soon as we saw it, captured by the tranquility of the walled garden and the feeling that it had been a much loved family home. The added bonus of the lovely little market town of St Jean d'Angely only ten minutes from our door, clinched the deal. We have now seen the house brought back to life and the outbuildings converted into stylish holiday cottages that have been enjoyed for 5 years by very happy holidaymakers.

• Travel Info: The airports of Le Rochelle, Poitiers and Bordeaux are all within an easy drive. The Brittany ports can be reached within four and a half to five and a half hours and Calais in seven hours. We are only 10 minutes from the lovely little market town of St Jean d'Angely and less than 30 minutes from Saintes and Cognac. The beautiful Atlantic beaches can be reached in less than an hour.
