Renovated stone house in St. Jean d’Angély, 3 mins walk from the centre of this lovely medieval town on the river Boutonne.  
 
The historic centre is beautifully preserved and many old houses date back to the 15th century. A fountain from the 16th century survives in the Place du Pilori, and walking around the narrow streets you will also find the Grosse Horloge (clock tower) built in 1406.The twin towers of the Abbey, which can be seen from the surrounding countryside, are just a hundred yards from the house. 
 
The town has a twice weekly market, a thriving arts scene, and brilliant indoor swimming pool complex to satisfy both children and serious swimmers. There are a number of good value restaurants and cafes in the town as well as down by the river.

    • The House has an open plan living-dining room and kitchen on the ground floor. The living area includes a sofabed, increasing the sleeping capacity to 6 if required. The loo is also situated downstairs. On the first floor are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with twin beds, and a bathroom with 2 washbasins, full size bath and overhead shower. The house has double-glazing and gas central heating throughout, making this a comfortable house all year round. Long lets are available by negotiation at any time of the year. The courtyard to the rear is a sunny quiet retreat; we have elderly neighbours along this little row of houses. Although it is not suitable for ball games, there is loads of space at the nearby park (10 mins walk/3 mins drive). Parking is on the street; this should not generally be a problem, and in any event there are spaces at a small free parking area 50 yds up the road.

    • St Jean d'Angely is well placed for easy access to a number of different beaches along the Atlantic Coast and the Gironde Estuary - the nearest at Fouras is just 25 miles away. 
     
    The house is also a good base for exploring this fascinating region – 
    • Saintes (15 miles) with its huge Roman amphitheatre, cruise boats that tour the River Charente 
    • Cognac (20 miles)  
    • Rochefort (25 miles)  
    • Angoulême (40 miles)  
    • La Rochelle (45 miles)  
     
    The Marais Poitevin (also known as the ‘Venise Verte’), north of Surgères, is a lovely area to explore – go to Coulon & hire bicycles, a canoe or small boat for a couple of hours to explore this network of tiny canals.  
    Poitiers (60 miles) and Futuroscope are also practical options for days out, with excellent road connections – St. Jean is 2 miles from exit 34 of the A10 motorway

    25% deposit with your booking secures the agreed dates for your stay. Remaining amount payable 8 weeks prior to departure. Cancellations notified more than 8 weeks before arrival date – full refund. Later cancellations – 75% refund. Seperate damages deposit required, £100. Please note that we can only accept payment by sterling cheque; if you live outside the UK we would suggest you arrange to send sterling bankers’ drafts. No set changeover day, arrive midweek if you prefer. Gas and electric included in rent for April – September, but a small additional charge will be made for dates outside this period. Also included is cleaning at the end of your stay. We would however ask you to leave the house tidy so as to ensure cleaning can be carried out easily and ensure a smooth changeover ready for the next guests. You will need to take towels and tea towels, but bed linen can be hired – prices from £10 per person.
