La Tavellerie is a solid stone farm house built in the 1880s. It is situated off a very small side road and stands in more than seven acres of its own land, including a small forest. There is a swimming pool, 12m x 4m, with the statutory fence and lockable gate. There are lovely views over the valley to the back of the house and good walks in all directions along small roads and lanes. 
 
The kitchen is a very big room with a typical Vendee fire place, beamed ceiling and tiled floor. It has modern units, work surfaces, fridge freezer, dishwasher, cooker, microwave, magimix and so on, and a big table and chairs. In the vaulted cellar below the kitchen there is a deepfreeze – so if you like to do occasional big shops that’s a useful resource for bread, meat and the steady stream of ice-creams that keep children happy. 
 
A door from the kitchen goes to the utility room where the boiler and washing machine are. The boiler is oil fired and supplies hot water and heating. A solar panel makes it more environmentally friendly. (It can also heat the pool at an extra cost, depending on the current price of fuel and the amount used, currently £13 per day). Off the utility room there is a large bathroom with a bath (with a view), basin, shower and toilet. There is also another separate toilet off the utility room. 
 
The living room is a large beamed room with sofas and chairs opening onto front and side terraces. The fireplace works well. There is a piano dating from the same period as the house for those who play. There is a music system. There is no television. 
 
Across the hall there is a downstairs bedroom with a double bed and a large en suite bathroom. 
 
 
First Floor  
 
Two large bedrooms with double beds. If anyone has an extremely bad back the bed in the pink room is the one to go for, although the mattresses in the blue room and the two in the green room are orthopaedic. 
 
One large bedroom with two traditional lit bateau (old French beds) but with good modern mattresses. 
 
One small bedroom with a cot and a child’s bed. 
 
And, down a few steps, another room with two single beds and two sofas that can be used as beds. 
 
A compact but fully functional upstairs bathroom with bath, loo and basin. 
 
On the landing there is a linen cupboard. 
 
 
Outside 
 
There is lots of open space.  
 
A swimming pool, 12 meters long and 4 meters wide overlooks the valley beyond. Call me on 02 5151 5478 (or in England on 0044 207 433 1771) if the pool needs attention. The works are set to run automatically, the salt in the pool being chlorinated as it is filtered. They are complicated and must not be altered.  
 
There are some shady areas near the house where it is pleasant to sit and there are an outside table and chairs and a barbeque.  
 
There is garden furniture.  
 
On one side of the house there is a large, stone terrace which is a sun-trap.  
The courtyard in front of the house is gravelled. There is lots of room for cars and turning. There is a garage if one wants to shelter the car. 
 
There is a small wood across the open space at the back where children can play safely and build hideouts and so on – it’s too small to get lost in.

La Tavellerie is orientated to families who wish to enjoy a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. The large South Eastern facing stone terrace is a sun trap for when it's not too hot, and for enjoying the sun at cooler times of year there is wall that provides shelter from the East wind. The shaded, grassed area overlooking the valley beyond is the place to be when it is hot. There is provision for barbaqueing both on the ground and in a custom made barbeque on wheels. There is plenty of garden furniture including 2 dining tables, chairs, benches and loungers, a swing seat and swings and ropes hanging from a large lime tree. Around the pool (12X4m) there is a paved area for relaxing. The pool is surrounded by a fence with a lockable gate so parents needn't worry about their children's safety. It also has a large shallow end to help non-swimmers. The pool can be heated at the extra cost of the fuel it takes.

The area is full of interesting historical remnants. The Donjon (Medieval tower) at Bazoges en Pareds is visible from the property. It also boasts a Medieval garden, a museum and opposite there is a good restaurant. The Abbey at Maillezais is magnificent and a good point from which to take a boat ride through the canels of the Venise Verte. The restaurant there is excellent. The best restaurant is about 4k away in a tiny village called St Juire. Vouvant is a fascinating town in which the tower built by the fairy Melusine still stands and of course La Rochelle must not me missed. The extensive and varied coast is about an hour's drive away. The immediate area being wooded and unspoilt is good walking terrain and there is horse riding available nearby.

On my internet site there is provision to pay by credit card. This works by paying a deposit to secure the booking and the balance 6 weeks before the holiday. Or payment can be arranged directly with me in which case it is by cheque on the same basis. If the holiday is cancelled the deposit is forfeited unless the property is relet. No deposit is required.
