Lauzerte is a 12th century fortified hilltop town. The region is historically known as Aquitaine. The town is on the pilgrimage route of St John of Compostella. It is officially recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in France. There is much to do and see both locally and around the region.
Lauzerte is divided into the old medieval upper town, where this property is located, and the more commercial lower town. The house is on a quiet old street with on-street parking for guests. It’s close to the upper town square which is the social centre of Lauzerte. The square hosts a Saturday morning market and is surrounded by a church and cafés, one of which has regular musical events.
In the lower town, there’s a good range of shops, including two bakers which provide good fresh bread and croissants every morning, a supermarket, a bank and a hotel-restaurant. The lower town has its own market every Wednesday morning.
There are many activities available locally, including a 9-hole golf course a short drive away, horse riding at the equestrian centre just outside town, tennis courts in Lauzerte, and hiking on the Grande Randonnée trail.
The nearby airport at Bergerac and Toulouse has flights from Paris, London Heathrow or Stanstead, Birmingham, Exeter and Southampton. Rail links are good and frequent, and Paris to Montauban or Agen is just four hours away by TGV. The journey by TAOS Train from Cahors is little longer, but more scenic.
