Vacation Rental Description
Peyrouat is an old Gascon farm hamlet, now divided into two properties, and consisting of several stone buildings. This pretty and spacious 18th century cottage is the oldest building on the site and, along with the owner's adjacent 19th century farmhouse, is set in several acres of land with lots of trees, planted gardens, open grassed areas for playing games, and of course the 11 x 5 saltwater swimming pool. The pool is shared with the owner who lives alone ( and uses the pool infrequently) and from time to time family or chambres d'hotes guests (2 rooms). There are no other gites on the site so there is a very high level of privacy and tranquillity in this location. The property is situated in the middle of the beautiful Gers countryside patterned with woods, vineyards and fields of wheat and sunflowers. Just on the doorstep is the GR65 footpath taking pilgrims on the route to Compostella in Northern Spain. But visitors don't have to walk as far as Spain! An hour's walk through the paths and woods of the country side will take walkers to the picturesque bastide villages of Montreal or Laressingle, and a further 45 minutes to the charming cathedral town of Condom. And the owner is happy to pick you up at the end of your walk!
The cottage itself is very pretty, fully restored while maintaining all original features such as beams and stonework. Light and bright, with simply painted white walls and attractive furnishings, the thick stone walls provide coolness in the hot summer months while the stone fireplace and excellent clearview stove (and central heating!) make the cottage an excellent all year choice for rental. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, one double downstairs with ensuite bathroom (bath/shower) and one twin upstairs with separate bathroom (bath/shower) which can also be accessed from the upstairs mezzanine where there is a bed settee and if required a cot for baby. The cottage is ideal for a family with 2/3 children , a couple or 2 couples.
The upstairs area is accessed by a sturdy spiral staircase from the living room with comfortable seating for 5 and with satellite TV receiving French and British channels ; a DVD player and a separate hifi for CDs and radio. There is a good selection of books, CDs and DVDs. The kitchen is well equipped with washing machine, dish washer, oven, hob, toaster etc and lots of useful kitchen tools. If you can't find what you want just ask! The owner loves to cook will provide meals for guests if requested (menus available !) and aims to provide guests with all that's required to sample the local produce in your own kitchen. (selection of cookbooks provided!) Though if you prefer to leave the kitchen behind there is an outdoor barbecue and covered dining terrace to the west of the property taking advantage of the evening sunshine.

This is a beautiful rural area with a variety of peaceful charms. The countryside itself can be experienced by walking directly from the property (maps provided) or by cycling, horseriding or boating, all options easily available. The river in Condom, the Biaise, is navigable and there are many organised boat trips or rental and also kayaking and fishing. The roads are empty so driving a few kilometres to explore the local village bastides and markets is a delight, whether you want to sample the architecture of the Anglo-French wars or the local Armagnac or foie gras. And if you feel like a more extended day trip you might like to try: the Atlantic coast at Archachon for its seafood and massive sand dune of the Pilat ; Biarritz with its smart cafes, beach and prom ; Bordeaux with its museums and chic shopping :Pau and the high Pyrenees : Lourdes with its shrines ; Toulouse with its lively culture and Airbus museum.
