Vacation Rental Description
Picturesque, vine-clad Gascony country cottage, peacefully located in an area of outstanding natural beauty overlooking the snow-capped central Pyrenees. This is a perfect base for walking, exploring - or a quiet holiday for 2. Secluded location away from it all - A romantic retreat - Easy access by road or air - Convenient for the autoroute, one-hour drive to Toulouse or Pau airports - Many repeat bookings.
Southern Gascony is one of France's most tranquil and unspoilt regions with breathtaking views and a relaxed pace of life. The cottage is attractively furnished and well-equipped, with many period features, beamed ceilings, comfortable seating and a log fire. The pretty, south-facing garden lined with mature trees and shrubs is ideal for relaxing. The long local views to the Pyrenees over pastureland, forests and distant villages are spectacular. The area offers great opportunities for enjoying good food & wine, nature, wildlife, stargazing, sunsets, walking, golf and riding.
Accommodation and Facilities:
Detached, self-catering country cottage. Floor area c. 120 m² (1 sq m approx. = 10 sq ft). Sleeps 2 - 5 (+ cot).
Set in peaceful countryside to the west of Toulouse in the northern Hautes-Pyrénées adjoining the Gers. The cottage lies about 7 km north-west of the village of Tournay and 7 km south of the popular market town of Trie-sur-Baïse with its supermarkets, patisseries, newsagent, bars, cafés and cheerful wine shop.
The cottage has 2 double rooms (one with an extra single bed), a small single bed on the mezzanine and a single bed in the adjoining passage room. The sitting-room downstairs has a sofabed. There's a small upstairs washroom. The bathroom downstairs has a washbasin + large mirror, bath with shower attachments, toilet, heating, hairdryer.
On the ground floor there's a comfortable living/dining room with kitchen area, fireplace, DVD, satellite TV (French digital terrestrial and UK), sofa, armchair, dining table & chairs, child's high chair. The well-equipped corner kitchen has a 4-burner hob, electric oven and grill, dishwasher, fridge, toaster, electric kettle, mixer and kitchen linen. A washing machine, tumble dryer and iron are provided. Linen and towels are an optional extra (see below). Both bedrooms have free-standing fans. The two main downstairs rooms have air-conditioning units. Telephone: free incoming/local calls. Internet: by arrangement.
The terrace on the west side is a suntrap from midday to sunset. It looks onto meadows and has panoramic south-west views to the Pyrenean peaks over oak and chestnut forests, lush pastureland and distant villages. If you prefer shade, have your apéritif on the wisteria-covered terrace in the main garden or in the cool of the latticed open barn.
Garden furniture is in good supply and for hot summer days there's a garden shower (plus hose). We can offer the use of four town bikes (free). Four new mountain bikes (3 sizes) are available for hire at a moderate charge. The property has private offroad parking (carport).

Bedrooms: Two double rooms, 1 single room (small connecting room between mezzanine & second double room). Sofabed in sitting-room downstairs. Bathrooms: 1 bathroom downstairs (modern bath with shower attachments + screens, washbasin, mirror, underfloor heating, towel radiator, toilet). Washroom upstairs (basin, mirror, toilet, radiator). Kitchen area: 4-burner gas hob, electric oven + grill, fridge, dishwasher, toaster, mixer, linen. Utility room: Washing machine, iron, tumble drier, freezer, sunshades, cushions. General: Open fire, elec. heating, telephone, linen + towels by arrangement, reversible air con. units in kitchen/dining room and sitting room. Good mobile phone reception. Internet by arrangement. Entertainment: UK sat. TV, French digital terrestrial TV, radio/CD/cassette player, DVD, board games, table tennis, boules, city bikes. Garden: Terrace, BBQ, garden furniture, private, offroad parking (carport). Sorry, no smokers, no pets.
Activities
This is the ideal setting for leisure and pleasure. Opportunities abound for enjoying nature, stargazing, exploring historic sites, walking, riding, golf and wine tasting. You'll discover plenty more to do and see. The perfect base for active holidays - or a quiet holiday for 2.
There's no exotic night life or street bustle - come to relax and soak up the quiet, the clear air, mountain views and lush green landscapes. Taste southern Gascony's great food and wine. Watch the birds and rare butterflies, or view the stars and planets through our telescope - there's very little light pollution and the night skies are amazingly dark.
This beautiful region is rich in natural, historical and culinary attractions. It's a short drive to Marciac for "Jazz in Marciac" - the international August festival. The Tour de France visits each July. It's an easy drive to the mountains, to Gallo-Roman sites in Comminges, to Madiran, Jurançon and Armagnac.

Nearest airports: Tarbes-Ossun-Lourdes (30 mins); Pau (40 mins, served by RyanAir); Toulouse (1 1/4 hrs, served by BA/AF/EasyJet/BMI); Carcassonne (2 hrs) and Biarritz (1 3/4 hrs, both served by RyanAir). Nearest rail stations: Tournay, Lannemezan, Tarbes, Pau, Toulouse. Nearest Motorrail station: Toulouse. TGV link to Bordeaux/Paris; TGV several times daily from/to Paris-Montparnasse / Tarbes-Lourdes (5 3/4 hrs). General Information: It's an easy drive to the mountains and Spain, to Béarn, Comminges, Madiran, Jurançon (important wine-producing areas) and Armagnac. Pays Basque c.60 mins; Atlantic coast (Bayonne, Biarritz, St. Jean de Luz) 1 3/4 hrs; San Sebastian 2 1/4 hrs; Narbonne and Med. coast c. 2 1/2 - 3 hrs.

'My best relaxation in 20 years: The views on my first morning took my breath away - with the chain of Pyrenees Mountains
stretching out across the horizon and their jagged snow-topped peaks. I sat in the garden on my second day and just listened to the eternal peach of the countryside. No passing traffic to fill the air with noise, friendly neighbours (...) and air so clear that the stars at night light up your path as you fetch in wood for the cottage's big open fire (...). There are many wonderful touches, like a telescope to watch the stars, loads of games, UK TV channels, a great collection of books to read and (...) plenty of wonderful walks in the area and towns to explore (...). But you also have to overcome the strong inclination not to leave at the end of your stay.' (RC, 03/10)
