Vacation Rental Description
Domaine Thomson is a lovely guesthouse in a small village in the Ariege region of the Pyprenees, nestling amongst rolling hills. A region of outstanding beauty, much historical interest, many Cathar Castles to visit, the medieval town of Mirepoix only a 15 minute drive away. Both Toulouse and Carcassonne are one hour away. It is a great place `to get away from it all` without being `too far from the madding crowd`.The house is on two floors with a modern and well equipped kitchen off the large entrance hallway. From the kitchen one enters the sitting room which has plenty of comfortable seating arranged around the large open fireplace, which in winter months is a real focal point. The sitting room is large, and the second half of it is equipped with much reading matter, games and childrens` toys. The dining room is entered from either the hallway, or the sitting room. It has an enormous wooden table that seats 12. A noticeable feature in the house are the wooden beams throughout, giving it a real old-world feel. It has the comforts of modern day with unique features that date it. Also off the entrance hall, is a large utility room containing dishwasher, washing machine, second refrigerator, and freezer, and much more. Upstairs, via the staircase that is in itself a lovely feature, and not steep, so practical and easy for children, the elderly or people recovering from operations, are four bedrooms, two of which contain one double sized bed and a single bed have their own ensuite toilet, wash-hand basin and shower; the other two bedrooms, one a double bedroom, the other, a family sized room with a double bed and two single beds share the use of a `hollywood style` bathroom, with two wash-hand basins, a shower and a bath. It is an understatement to say that this is a very comfortable bathroom. There is a separate toilet adjacent to this bathroom.
All the rooms in the house have large windows giving plenty of natural light. There is a feeling of spaciousness that combined with the furnishings gives it a real homely feeling. Many people who have stayed here comment on how quickly they feel `at home`. Those with children, how `relaxed and unstressed` they feel.
Outside the dining room and sitting room, is a terrace where meals may be eaten during spring, summer and autumn. The garden is made up of two large sections, one of flat lawn which is an ideal area for children to play safely, for people to sit in garden chairs and read, or to eat meals in under the trees. The outdoor swimming pool is located in the other section of sloping garden, where it has its own terrace with plenty of sunbathing space to while away those hours.
To the front and side of the house is the drive in and parking areas. This area is private and a `cul-de-sac` so no other traffic but those coming to the house need access.
It is a very safe environment for children.

There is a magnificent outdoor wood/charcoal barbeque. Hair-dryers.
Activities
This is a rural area of outstanding beauty, with miles and miles of paths suitable for 4x4s that wind through forests, along open landscapes that should guests be keen on walking, mountain biking, or pony trekking, one can literally leave from the doorstep and immediately be sampling the delights of this picturesque place. In spring - from Feb/March to end of June the wild orchids put on such a display. Throughout the year the wildflowers are amazing.
Should you wish to go further afield (5km) there is a flying club, which does parachute jumps, and it is also possible to arrange trips in a microlite aircraft.
There is a horseriding centre in the village, which offers a range of options, riding lessons for people of all standards, treks of differing lengths, led by people who are well informed and passionate about this area.
Rock climbing centres are about a 30-40 minute drive away, with climbs of different grades of difficulty.

The whole house is offered for rental as a gite in the months of JULY and AUGUST, from Saturday to Saturday. 50% deposit(non refundable) is paid to secure booking, and the balance to be paid one calendar month before arrival date. Payment by cheque or Paypal or Western Union. From September to June the property is run as a B&B/Chambre d`Hotes. This is priced per night, starting at 59 euros per night reducing to 57 euros for 2/3 nights, and 55 euros 4 nights or more. There is also a family bedroom priced 69 euros per night, reducing to 67 euros for 2/3 nights, and 65 euros for 4 nights or more. For B&B guests evening meals are available if requested more than 24 hours in advance, payment is made for these prior to departure. Payment may be made using Paypal, cheques in euros, or cash. In the event of cancellation, the deposit is forfeit.

An English oasis in the French countryside
My family and I spent 3 days with Sarah at the beginning of our French holiday. The accomodation was clean and more than adequate and the breakfasts were great. Both father and son are cyclists and Sarah ensured they received a hearty breakfast which always included eggs. (Something we missed on the rest of our holiday) Every evening, we came back to a home cooked meal - Sarah introduced us to a number of new vegetables. The pool was a welcome respite and despite the inclement weather, we used it on a number of occasions. Sarah's genuine interest in her clients makes this establishment stand out from any of the others we visited during our stay in France. We will most definitely pencil this in for our next visit to France.

Nous sommes canadiens et le domaine Thomson a été notre premier arrêt lors de notre voyage en France. Cet endroit calme nous a permis de nous reposer et de nous remettre du décalage horaire. Madame Thomson est une personne très accueillante qui a rendu notre séjour agréable en répondant à nos besoins particuliers.
La chambre que nous avions était conçue pour quatre personnes. Mme Thomson a installé un lit supplémentaire pour nous accomoder puisque nous étions 5 personnes. Nos trois enfants (adolescents) ont apprécié les 2 jours que nous avons passé au domaine. Ils ont pu se baigner et profiter des commodités de la maison.
Les déjeûners qui nous ont été servis étaient délicieux.
Nous recommandons cette place pour son accueil chaleureux.

Domaine Thomson is a lovely house. It has a real `family` feel about it, and now that I have completed what I felt needed doing inside, guests can be really comfortable in what is a fairly old building. Inside the house, it is warm and cosy in winter, and cool and refreshing in summer. The pool is extremely popular, and I am endeavouring to surround the pool enclosure with wild flowers. The very secure fence surrounding the pool gives everyone peace of mind regarding small children and the large level lawn to the rear of the house is an excellent play area for family games, badminton, boules, even to put tents up on, or just to relax on.
I offer B&B/Chambre d`Hotes from September to June, and in July and August I rent out the entire house as a giant gite on a weekly basis from Saturday to Saturday. Second or third week bookings receive a discount.
I can, and do, serve evening meals, using my own home grown vegetables, and locally sourced meats. I present the meals in the French style, choosing dishes that I think reflect the diverse flavours of this region. Guests wishing dinner, need to request this at least 24 hours in advance.
This area is fantastic for walking, horseriding, road cycling, or mountain biking, and of course seeing the wild flowers. There are so many paths/routes that may be taken straight from the doorstep. There is an abundance of wild orchids from March to June, and throughout the year there is always something of interest to be found in flower. There are a wide range of birds to be seen, many varieties of small birds, and of the larger varieties, red kites, buzzards and eagles can be commonly seen.
This is a rural area, of rolling hills covered in wooded forests, pasture land, and crop land. The crops are wheat, maize (sweetcorn), and sunflowers. Also some millet, and vines. The nature of these crops are very colourful and spectacular just in themselves, without all the added interest of wild flowers and birds to see.
Also in this area are many Cathar Castles that cannot fail to catch your interest. The architecture of these - many in ruins - is so dramatic, you want to visit as many as you have time for.
Mirepoix, my local town, is a Medieval town, a fantastic example of tudor architecture, and with its cafes, Monday market, Cathedral, and lots of festivals throughout the year, is most definitely somewhere you will love to visit. And revisit.
It is difficult to know what are the most important things to tell about, a) my house, pool and garden; and b) my surroundings. All I can say, is if you do decide to come to stay here, I will do my utmost to tell you what I know of the region and recommend places for you to visit that I think you will like
and help you organise your activities. But don`t forget, you will be here for a holiday - so some time must be set aside for just chilling out. I have a wide choice of books for all ages, childrens games, jigsaws and lots of things that just make people feel at home.
The small village I live in - Engravies, is very easy to get to, just one hour from both Carcassonne and Toulouse, and each of these very easy drives by car.
