Vacation Rental Description
Welcome to Rose Cottage. Built around 160 years ago as a farm labourer's home, Rose Cottage is now fully restored and converted into a comfortable self-catering holiday home. Sympathetically modernised, it retains its rustic charm with exposed original oak beams and an impressive old wood burning stove. The cottage is now totally renovated in a style which retains its essential character. The main beams were literally hewn from the trunks of large oaks. The original crosscut saws, found in the roof, are now wall decorations.

In a peaceful hamlet close to the village of Lussac-les-Eglises, Rose Cottage is in an exceptionally quiet location. Immediately outside the back door is a small lawn with breakfast table set, next to a sunny south-facing courtyard for outside dining, adjacent brick barbecue, private parking and a very safe, clean solar heated swimming pool with 24sq.m decked sun terrace with gas barbecue, all for private use by guests.

The cottage, pool and its leisure areas are not overlooked from any direction. The owners' house and Rose Cottage are at the end of a cul-de-sac beyond which is a farm track between fields. In the other direction is another farm track, no habitation beyond either. Perfect for walks, lots of wildlife and almost continuous birdsong.

Within a few minutes' walk of the cottage is the Etang Murat, a bird sanctuary lake with viewing hut, so remote that it is invariably vacant, even in the height of the holiday season.

Two minutes' from the cottage beyond the end of the cul-de-sac we have a private playing field of about an acre, reserved for our guests' use only.

The natural beauty of the landscape, quiet roads, superb cuisine and great affordable wines make this the ideal place in which to relax and unwind completely. Tranquility on a plate! After only two years' letting, our Guest Book is full of embarrassingly flattering comments about our hospitality. Come and read it for yourselves!

Owners Profile
Rose Cottage

We are Chris and Joan Callaghan. We retired to enjoy the beauty of rural France two years ago. We wanted to stay active, so we chose an old property with potential for improvement, with an adjacent derelict cottage crying out for total renovation. It was certainly a challenge. Our kids and grandkids thought we were mad to take it on but now they love it.

Rose Cottage is now totally renovated in a style which retains its essential character. The main beams were hewn from the trunks of large oaks. The original crosscut saws, found in the roof, are now wall decorations!

The cottage is self-contained and fully equipped for easy self-catering. There is dedicated private parking immediately outside, a brick barbecue and two outside dining areas, plus the pool terrace to snack on whilst sunbathing. 150 metres from the cottage is our own playing field with a nine-hole putting challenge! It is very basic, just a bit of fun and it can be extended to eighteen holes if you go around twice!

Our solar heated swimming pool is nearly eight metres long but only four feet deep, safe for swimmers and non-swimmers alike. It is a saline pool which means that the water is isotonic ("body friendly") It is clear, it sparkles and has a soft "feel". For safety and bathing pleasure the importance of maintaining correct water chemical balance cannot be overstated. We achieve this in our pool by means of an automatic chlorinator. No chlorine smell or taste, no stinging eyes and no damage to swimwear or towels! The pool, poolside shower and sun deck facilities are for exclusive use by guests.

The cottage has two bedrooms, a family room which sleeps three and another with twin beds and an en-suite wc and basin. The main bathroom has a roomy shower, hairdryer, pedestal basin and w.c.

The living room has comfortable seating for five and the settee converts into another bed if required. It has UK satellite TV and radio, CD and DVD players, plus board games and a good stock of books. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped, with a gas cooker, fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans, crockery and glassware. We provide all linen and towels and the cottage is cleaned every Saturday.

The project has been a great joy to plan, undertake and complete. It is beautiful. Come and see for yourselves! Our first priority is our total commitment to ensure that our guests feel completely at home. If there is anything you need, just ask, we are on hand right next door.
