Owner Location Comment
L'ancien Presbytere is situated in tranquil countryside within 5 minutes of the ancient medieval walled town of Le Dorat.Le Dorat is rich in history and and boasts an 11th Century collegiate, Carmelite convent and beautiful cobbled streets.According to legend, the cultural capital of the Basse Marche owes its name to the gilded angel perched on the summit of the collegial ’Lou Dora’ bell tower. Over history, the town has lived through troubled moments: besieged by the Black Prince (Prince of Wales) in 1356, the town was also badly damaged during the War of the Religions. Le Dorat was a town of nobility and property owners. A small detour down a narrow street will show you the old houses and estates full of character. One of the most remarkable is that of the Hotel du Senchal Claude de la Pouge (16th century) in rue Saint-Michel. It’s flanked by a bartisan covered by chestnut shingles and topped by finials, Le Dorat still has a 15th century shepherds’ gate. It’s the only one in the region and most probably owes its name to the fact that shepherds used it. There’s also a tower on the collegial, one of the last witnesses to the warrior past of this Marchois town. Le Dorat celebrates its ostensions; ceremonies to venerate the relics of the town’s saint protectors.
