We never had the intention of buying a house in France, but when we came to visit a friend about 12 years ago, we happened to be looking in an estate agent's window when we noticed a lovely big old house. We made an appointment to view it and straight away we thought that it would be a great opportunity to renovate the house and to eventually open a B&B. After taking a year to sell our property in Suffolk, UK, we packed all our things, put our furniture into storage and we drove with our two cats to Champsac, Haute-Vienne.
We have now been living in Champsac for nearly 6 years. The first two years we lived in a mobile home while we started the onslaught of fixing our large dilapidated house, which had a leaky roof, no floors or ceilings and needed a lot of love and attention. After two years we had managed to complete the house to a point where we could move in, but at that time we only had a bedroom, lounge and kitchen. It then took a further 2.5 years to get the house finished to a standard where we could receive guests and for them to enjoy the property as we had imagined. We now have a house that has 4 bedrooms (all with adjoining bathrooms/shower rooms), an office, a small private lounge, a kitchen, a utility room and a large lounge/dining room with adjoining games room and a small kitchen for guests to make tea/coffee and snacks.
Luckily Mark is a roofer and plasterer by trade, which helped tremendously.
