Vacation Rental Description
A spacious, light, modern comfortable villa in a quiet residential area near the edge of Laroque des Alberes, with views of the mountains, the old fort in Laroque and over the plain towards the sea. Laroque des Alberes is a traditional Catalan village 10km from the sea at the foot of the Alberes hills. The historic centre of the village, containing an old fort and church, is a picturesque short walk away. Laroque has village shops - a small supermarket, tabac, bakeries, butcher, chemist - several bars and restaurants, a pizza takeaway, a small weekly market and a helpful tourist office. A larger supermarket is a few minutes drive away

Ideal for families to relax by the pool, or take a short (10min) drive to the sandy Mediterranean beaches. For hikers and walkers the Alberes hills are on the doorstep

On the ground floor is a large open plan lounge/diner/kitchen

The kitchen has been newly refitted and has oven, microwave, electric hob, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and cupboard space. Between the kitchen and the dining area is a granite breakfast bar, with additional bar-stool seating

The lounge has comfortable sofas and arm chairs, television and DVD player. For winter there is a cosy log burning stove

From the lounge patio doors lead to the terraces and fully enclosed and private garden planted with fruit trees (lemon, apricot, figs, olives etc), grape vines a palm tree and other typical Mediterranean plants. Guests are welcome to pick and eat any fruit from the garden as it ripens

The private swimming pool (4mX7m) is surrounded by paved terrace, has corner steps down at the shallow end making getting in and out easy, and an electrically operated security cover

The downstairs double bedroom, with king-size (160cm wide) double bed, has french windows to the garden and a large en suite shower room with enclosed shower cubicle, basin, bidet and WC

On the ground floor there is also a separate WC and a washing machine.

Upstairs is a double bedroom, with king-size (160cm wide) double bed, with patio doors to a jasmine-covered balcony with lovely panoramic views of the Alberes mountains, Mount Canigou and across the plain to the sea

The twin bedroom has views of the Alberes, the old village of Laroque with its fort, and across the plain to the sea

The family bathroom has bath with shower over, basin, bidet and WC

All the bedrooms have plenty of storage space, with wardrobes, bedside cabinets and chests of drawers. They are all equipped with floor standing oscillating fans and have shutters to keep cool in the summer

This area of Southern France enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with on average 300 days of sunshine each year, enjoying hot summers and mild winters - ideal for a holiday at any time of year!

Grapes thrive in this climate too and the famous Banyuls, Minervois and Cotes du Roussillon wines are produced locally and are widely available from the local vineyards covering the countryside

The area is rich in history with many medieval Cathar and crusader castles to visit. Particularly spectacular is the restored citadel of Carcassonne, a UNESCO world heritage site

The coastal region has a variety of clean sandy beaches, fishing villages and modern resorts. The coastal lagoons provide birdwatching opportunities. In the winter skiing is possible from the resorts in the Pyrenees

The nearest beach resort is Argeles (10km) with its miles of wide sandy beaches and palm tree lined promenade. Other nearby beaches are St Cyprien and Canet.

Also nearby are the fishing villages of Port Vendres and Collioure which is popular with artists and contains several museums and galleries. The museum of modern art in Ceret is also nearby, and the Dali museum in Spain is worth a day trip

There are many local carnivals and festivals throughout the year in the area

    Owners Profile

We holidayed in this region for several years before buying our house. I love the strong sunlight, the climate (hot summers, mild spring and autumn, and even in winter its not cold for long), the spectacular mountain scenery combined with typically Mediterranean vegetation, the fabulous beaches, the picturesque villages with artists studios, galleries and museums, and the wealth of history associated with the Cathars and Templars etc.
We chose Laroque des Alberes because of its location near to the beaches, yet in the foothills away from the summer resorts. Its a charming and friendly, typically Catalan old village, but well served with local shops and facilities. The cafes and restaurants range from relaxed bistros to a sophisticated Michelin starred restaurant. We chose our house because of its quiet location in the village, modern facilities and great views. Our family all like different things and there are plenty of things to do locally to satisfy them all. The kid's verdict when they first saw the house was 'Wow, its the best place we've ever stayed', and even now as grumpy teenagers they are still happy to come with us, and even bring their friends! Each time we go we discover new places and things to do. We're always very busy when we stay, but always leave feeling relaxed and wanting to visit again.
