Spend a relaxing holiday in this comfortable village house in Canal du Midi village of Poilhes. Built in 1890 for a local winegrower, completely renovated in 1985 and refurbished in 2004, La Croix Rousse offers spacious accommodation and is an excellent base for exploring all the Languedoc has to offer. Three bedrooms, terrace, garage, sleeps six.
The main part of the accommodation is on the first floor (2nd floor to North Americans). On this floor you will find the large L-shaped sitting and dining room, the fitted kitchen, two bedrooms, a bathroom, WC and the terrace.
The open plan sitting and dining room is spacious and airy and well furnished with sofa, easy chairs, a television with satellite receiver, DVD player and a stereo system with CD, cassette and radio. In the sitting area an oval dining table provides seating for up to eight, and the country style buffet is well stocked with china and glassware. The bathroom on the first floor is shared by the two double bedded rooms, and is fitted with a bathtub with over head shower, two wash basins and has plenty of storage space. A separate WC is next door to this bathroom.
On the ground floor is a large bedroom suite, created from what once used to be the wine cellar. Where the casks and tanks once were is now a spacious and in the summer pleasantly cool room, equipped with two single beds, which can be pushed together. A writing desk, easy chair and large country style wardrobe make this a very attractive room.
The en-suite shower room is fitted with shower cubicle, wash basin and WC.
Full central heating makes La Croix Rousse a very comfortable house throughout the year. A large garage on the ground floor can accommodate up to two cars. A utility area on the ground floor is equipped with washing machine, deep freezer, and a small courtyard at the back of the house is perfect for drying laundry. An ironing board and iron complete the laundry facilities. The house has been entirely decorated and re-furnished for 2004; all beds and bedding are new, as are most appliances. The village of Poilhes is one of several villages in the area, where the historic Canal du Midi passes through the centre, only a short walk away from La Croix Rousse.
Picturesque, with a foot and road bridge, the canal was once an important traffic route from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. Today it is used largely by pleasure craft and its towpaths are ideal for walking and cycling in the shade of the plane trees, which line the canal banks.
In the village are two restaurants, a grocery store, post office and a number of mobile stores selling fresh produce visit on a daily basis. Poilhes is only 4 km from Capestang, where there is a large supermarket with petrol station, a bank with 24 hr cash machine, a twice weekly market, and a selection of other shops, cafes and restaurants.

The immediate surrounding area is very rich in history with the pre-historic Oppidum at Enserune giving spectacular views onto the Etang de Montady, a
marshy lake drained by an ingenious system of canals. The nearby Via
Domitia brought trade and commerce to the area in Roman times and
excavations from the period can be viewed in Narbonne and Salleles d'Aude.
Cathar history is present almost everywhere and the ancient fortress of
Carcassonne is only an hours drive away.
Poilhes is within easy driving distance of International airports -
Montpellier (60 mins), Carcassonne (60 mins), Toulouse (2 hours) and
Barcelona (3.5 hours). There are railway stations at Beziers (30 mins) and
