Description:
A Delightful Village House in a village of character by le Canal du Midi at the budget end of the scale
rental property

Vacation Rental Description
Our house is a typical stone built Maison de Village close to the centre of the attractive, thriving village of Capestang with lots narrow streets.
This village is on the plain between the Pyrenees and the Massif Centrale and is only a short distance to the nearest Mediterranean beaches (25 minutes).
Capestang is on le Canal de Midi and although it is popular with tourists it has not been spoilt by this and retains its old world charm. It is still very much a "working village" where the main industry of the area is viticulture producing many good wines. The locals are very friendly and hospitable, making a stay here delightful.
Our house is built on three floors, the ground floor consisting of a smallish garage, a hallway, a utility room (which houses the washing machine and a butler sink) and a single bedroom which has its own wash basin.
The first floor consists of a lounge, dining area, compact kitchen and a WC.
In the lounge there is a three piece suite, a couple of occasional chairs, coffee tables, a book shelf containing a good selection both fiction and none fiction books, some of which appertain to the area. There is a flat screen TV which receives both local programs via a terrestrial aerial and English TV programs via satellite. It also receives a number of English speaking radio programs, including Irish.
In the dining area there is a round table which is extendable with 4 chairs and with two stools will seat up to 6 people.
The kitchen contains a fridge/freezer, a cooker operating on bottled gas, a microwave oven/grill, toaster and kettle.
On the third floor there are two double bedrooms, each with a pair of single beds, built in wardrobes, a chest of drawers, a chair, mirror and a bedside table. Independent lights and switches enable you, if you wish to read in bed.
There is a fair sized shower room, containing a walk in shower, a bidet, wash basin, cupboard, mirrors and electric points for hair dryers and electric razors.
There is further WC on this floor separate to the shower room. Also on this floor the exposed beams and woodwork create a pleasing ambience. Skylights in the roof make this floor light and airy.
Heating is by electric convector heaters and we have a number of fans to enable cooling in the hot weather.

  • The village is over 1,000 years old with lots of old architecture and narrow streets. The evenings can be spent walking alongside Canal du Midi, exploring the village then calling in for aperitifs at one of the two cafés in the main square of the village where you will be able to sit outside, watch the world go by, admire the stunning architecture of the church and pass the time of day with the locals.
A number of restaurants which give good value for money and the Café de la Grille has a Bistro type menu.
There are a number of beaches, Valras being the closest at about 25 minutes by car. This has a fine sandy beach with sheltered bathing areas for children and also a playground making it very family orientated.
Closer there are the remains of an old Roman fortification (D'oppidom Ensurune) on a hilltop, about 5 kms away as the crow flies, where are the remains of the old Roman houses and an excellent museum. Hire cycles available.

    Owner Location Comment
Nestling on the plain between the mountains of the Massife Centrale and the Pyrenees, just 25 kms from from great Mediterranean beaches, Capestang in Languedoc, southern France makes an ideal spot to spend a holiday and explore the surrounding area. It boasts of a Mediterranean climate with 300 sunny days a year on average. Le Canal du Midi passes through the northern edge of the village (about 500 metres from our house) with a "port" where you can go for walks, watch the boats, hire a cycle or eat at the Batellier.
In the tree lined village square there are two cafes where the table from each meet in the middle and tourists and locals alike relax and take refreshment. On a Sunday and Wednesday this is also the venue for the local market and it becomes a veritable meeting place.
Local restaurants in the village are popular with locals and tourists alike and people wishing to eat would be well advised to book a table in advance.
The area stretches well back into the mists of time with many relics still surviving. The Church is most striking being built in 13th century, it was never properly completed. It started with the original dimensions of a cathedral but because of the "Black Death" building had to be cut short, so it ended up truncated. In fact in the middle ages, Capestang was the summer residence of the Bishop of Narbonne.
Some of the original village walls still exist, part of which is only about 100 metres from our house.
Going just a little further afield there is the Oppidum d'Enserune where there are the ruins of a Roman hill top fortification where the lower walls of the houses still exist. There is also an incredible view of what used to be an ancient lake which was drained in the middle ages to produce a dartboard style patchwork of fields. In fact Capestang took its name from this lake as "Cap Etang" Close to here there is a canal tunnel which travels beneath the hill. At nearby Salleles d'Aude a Roman Pottery has been excavated. At the picturesque village of Minerve, originally a Cathar stronghold, there is a museum dedicated to this period of the area's history. At Carcassonne there is famous castle, which although very touristy, is a must see.
Go south to Narbonne and here you can see the Cathedral, many chic shops and an excavation of a Roman road. South of Narbonne there is a safari park. Further south still you travel down to Perpignan and not far after this you come to the Spanish border. If you travel to the east to Narbonne Plage you will travel through "Le Clappe": a small range of limestone hills, rising to about 1000 feet with variously wooded, rugged and shrub terrain. Very picturesque and a great location for a picnic, where you can look down on Narbonne Plage and the sea beyond. Talking of the countryside, this variously wooded, cultivated with vines and some parts natural, resembling the Camargue, then with hills and mountains not too far away.
Round and about especially close to the coastal resorts there are opportunities for horse riding. At the resorts there are opportunities for boating, wind surfing and various other water sports. Boats can be hired on various points of le Canal du Midi and to the south east of Narbonne there is an airfield where various aviation sports can be indulged in, including parachute jumping.
To the east there are the historic towns of Beziers, Pezanas (Noted for Mouliere and its antiques), Agde (where there is water leisure complex)Bouzigues (renowned for its seafood). An hour will get you to Montpellier, very chic, ideal for the ladies to mosey around the shops whilst their husbands relax on the Place de Comedie and the kids can have a ride through the narrow streets on a land train, just to mention but a few attractions in this area and I haven't mentioned Nimes and Arles.
