Vacation Rental Description
Our house is mainly stone built on 2 floors and described as a Maison de Village, meaning that it is a terraced house in a village and is typical of this area. It is comparatively cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Ground Floor: Here a small porch leads into a lounge/diner 7 x 5 metres and beyond this a fully equipped kitchen 3 x 4 metres with granite work tops. There is a connecting door which gives access to utility area and a WC at the rear of the garage. The garage itself will accommodate a moderately sized car. From the rear of the garage and the rear of the lounge/diner there are two sets of French doors leading onto a patio area, approximately 6 x 4 metres where there is garden furniture and a barbecue and beyond this a walled garden about 10 x 6 metres where there is a "spa pool" which is in operation during the warmer months of the year.
The lounge has the convenience of a flat screen TV which receives both French terrestrial channels and English language TV and radio programs via satellite, an audio system allowing you play your own recorded music and there is comfortable lounge seating with a 6 place dining area. For the chillier evenings in the spring autumn and winter there is a wood burning stove. There is also telephone and wi fi broadband internet access, the use of which is optional.
First Floor: Stairs from the lounge/diner lead to the first floor where there are 3 double bedrooms, one en suite, and a luxury bathroom with a bath tub, a separate shower, wash basin, WC, mirrors and powers points for shavers and hairdryers. We keep a hair drier in the main bathroom to assist with the problem of travelling on airlines with luggage weight restrictions.
The main bedroom is equipped with a pair of single beds, a built in wardrobe, bedside table and chest of drawers. From here there is access to the "en suite" which has a shower, wash basin with a mirror and electrical points for shavers and hairdryers.
The second bedroom is equipped with a pair single beds, a built in wardrobe, bedside table and chest of drawers.
The third bedroom is equipped with a double bed, a built in wardrobe, bedside table and chest of drawers.
Velux windows in the roof give additional natural light to the stairs and upstairs landing.
The beams have been left exposed throughout the second floor giving a pleasing ambience.
Our house is centrally heated and air conditioned so that it remains comfortable in all conditions. A wood burning stove adds further comfort in the colder seasons.
The village is over 1,000 years old with lots of old architecture and narrow streets. The evenings can be spent walking alongside the Canal du Midi, exploring the village then calling in for an aperitif at one of the two cafés in the main square of the village where you will be able to sit outside, watch the world go by, admire the stunning architecture of the church and pass the time of day with the locals. There are a number of restaurants which give good value for money and the Café de la Grille has a Bistro type menu. All the restaurants and bars are within walking distance.
There are a number of beaches; Valras being the closest is about 25 minutes by car. This has a fine sandy beach with sheltered bathing areas for children and also a playground making it very family orientated.
A recent review of our house:
"Hi Jane,
Thanks, we had a great holiday. The house was perfect. The air conditioning in the bedrooms was very nice. We enjoyed the garden and the jacuzzi. Everything worked perfectly in the kitchen which was well fitted out. The town was lively and pleasant with a choice of restauarants and boulangeries. Overall top marks.
I should add that Mike was very helpful in giving us tips on where to visit and to place to eat.
best regards

Capestang makes an ideal base to explore the rest of this beautiful region which dates back to pre-Roman times and abounds with historical relics, the nearest being at the Oppidum d'Ensurune (5 kms as the crow flies) which was originally a Roman fortification on a hilltop. The remains of the houses still exist there as well a very good museum.
Later on the village was included in the Cathar region but this ended eventually after it was invaded by the Franks from the north in 1209. Cycles are available for hire from Mellow Velo's.
In Capestang itself there are frescoes dating back to the middle ages, some of the old walls of the village still exist.
The Pyreneees and Massif Centrale are only a short driving distance away.

There are airports at Carcassonne, Perpignan and Montpellier, together with Beziers below within an hour's travel by car. Nimes is about 1.5 hours, Toulouse and Girona about 2 hours away. Owner Location Comment
Nestling on the plain between the mountains of the Massife Centrale and the Pyrenees, just 25 kms from from great Mediterranean beaches, Capestang in Languedoc, southern France makes an ideal spot to spend a holiday and explore the surrounding area. It boasts of a Mediterranean climate with 300 sunny days a year on average. Le Canal du Midi passes through the northern edge of the village (about 500 metres from our house) with a "port" where you can go for walks, watch the boats, hire a cycle or eat at the Batellier.
In the tree lined village square there are two cafes where the table from each meet in the middle and tourists and locals alike relax and take refreshment. On a Sunday and Wednesday this is also the venue for the local market and it becomes a veritable meeting place.
Local restaurants in the village are popular with locals and tourists alike and people wishing to eat would be well advised to book a table in advance.
The area stretches well back into the mists of time with many relics still surviving. The Church is most striking being built in 13th century, it was never properly completed. It started with the original dimensions of a cathedral but because of the "Black Death" building had to be cut short, so it ended up truncated. In fact in the middle ages, Capestang was the summer residence of the Bishop of Narbonne.
Some of the original village walls still exist, part of which is only about 100 metres from our house.
Going just a little further afield there is the Oppidum d'Enserune where there are the ruins of a Roman hill top fortification where the lower walls of the houses still exist. There is also an incredible view of what used to be an ancient lake which was drained in the middle ages to produce a dartboard style patchwork of fields. In fact Capestang took its name from this lake as "Cap Etang" Close to here there is a canal tunnel which travels beneath the hill. At nearby Salleles d'Aude a Roman Pottery has been excavated. At the picturesque village of Minerve, originally a Cathar stronghold, there is a museum dedicated to this period of the area's history. At Carcassonne there is famous castle, which although very touristy, is a must see.
Go south to Narbonne and here you can see the Cathedral, many chic shops and an excavation of a Roman road. South of Narbonne there is a safari park. Further south still you travel down to Perpignan and not far after this you come to the Spanish border. If you travel to the east to Narbonne Plage you will travel through "Le Clappe": a small range of limestone hills, rising to about 1000 feet with variously wooded, rugged and shrub terrain. Very picturesque and a great location for a picnic, where you can look down on Narbonne Plage and the sea beyond. Talking of the countryside, this variously wooded, cultivated with vines and some parts natural, resembling the Camargue, then with hills and mountains not too far away.
Round and about especially close to the coastal resorts there are opportunities for horse riding. At the resorts there are opportunities for boating, wind surfing and various other water sports. Boats can be hired on various points of le Canal du Midi and to the south east of Narbonne there is an airfield where various aviation sports can be indulged in, including parachute jumping.
To the east there are the historic towns of Beziers, Pezanas (Noted for Mouliere and its antiques), Agde (where there is water leisure complex)Bouzigues (renowned for its seafood). An hour will get you to Montpellier, very chic, ideal for the ladies to mosey around the shops whilst their husbands relax on the Place de Comedie and the kids can have a ride through the narrow streets on a land train, just to mention but a few attractions in this area and I haven't mentioned Nimes and Arles.

A Comment from Niki on 19.09.2011,

"Hi Mike and Mavis,
Just wanted to say what a wonderful time we had at your lovely French home. It was far better than we expected as the internet
does not do it justice. It is really light and airy, immaculately clean, comfortable and very well equipped. We loved the garden and the
spa pool which was great after a day on the bikes. It was lovely to stay somewhere that was not just fitted out as a holiday let but
as a second home. Capestang is wonderful little town with plenty to do in the day and in the evening. La Table de Vigneron was our
favourite restaurant as the setting is just fabulous. Thanks too for all your advice and information on the area.

Dear Mike,

I'm just writing to say that we are now back from France and how much we enjoyed staying at L'Hirondelle. It is beautifully furnished - probably the best French house we've stayed in. We were also pleasantly surprised by how nice the garden is - I don't really think the photos do the place justice! It is more spacious than it looks and the downstairs, especially the kitchen, wonderfully well equipped and modern, likewise the main bathroom. We were also very glad of the air conditionning- we took our time coming back and stayed in places without and also two Novotels where they had it but it wasn't nearly as effective as yours! So we were more than satisfied, thank you!

Best wishes,

Gill

John Hamill says in a further E-Mail:-

"Hi Mike,

I received your letter yesterday. Thanks for the refund. We very much enjoyed the holiday. The house was perect, the weather was good and the town was lively. We ate out in the Cafe de la Grille on the last night and wished that we had eaten there more. The kids loved the steak and chips and my wife had a lovely fish meal while I ate grilled lamb. It was delicious and very reasonable.

My wife asked me to say to you that she didn't think the website photos did the house full justice. Perhaps a wide angle shot of the back from the bathroom window would give a better feel of the garden. She also said that the kitchen was bigger than it seemed.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice and we really did enjoy ourselves.

best regards

John"

Lost in France, or should I say Languedoc

I had spent a career in law enforcement but the beauty of this was that it allowed for early retirement, not only that but to take part of the pension as cash.
We had been travelling to France for our annual holidays for a number of years and finally ended up at Beziers in the south.
The area so impressed me that I decided to invest my cash in a house in a village, called Capestang. This was now 20 years ago.
This is an old village by le Canal du Midi of some 3000 inhabitants, full of old world charm, close to the Med.
I never regretted it - we let the house out to visitors to help with running costs.
As time progressed we were able to buy and renovate another house in the village: http://hirondellecapestang.com/index.html
This gave us the opportunity to transform an original shell into something really to our liking - our hope is that since we like it so much, so will you and the testimonials we have received so far support this.
