Owner Location Comment
La Bastide des Lavandieres is located at a cross-road in the centre of the little village of Canaules which is literally surrounded by the vines & vineyards of the wonderful Languedoc wine producing region of southern France.
If you feel like seeing the vines close-up or learning a bit more about how wine is produced & blended then a short trip to the nearest village - St. Jean de Serres (2km) will take you to our own LVI vineyard & cave which guests at La Bastide des Lavandieres are welcome to visit .
With an average 300 days of sunshine each year you will be literally spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities here . Activities available nearby include Golf, Horse Riding , Fishing , Water Sports , Climbing & Hill-walking . The Cévennes National Park with it’s wonderful flora & fauna is well worth a visit also .
Some of the larger towns in the area include Anduze (11.5 km) which is known as the gateway to the Cévennes . From here you can board the old steam train which takes you through the Cévennes to St. Jean du Garde stopping along the way to visit the famous Bambouseraie which is home to Europe’s largest bamboo collection . Anduze is a lively tourist town with many good restaurants , shops & cafe’s . Nearby Sauve is a medieval town (12km) which has managed to retain all of it’s old charm . There are a number of good restaurants hidden among the narrow streets as well as 2 bars in the small town square . Celebrity residents in Sauve include the characaturist Robert Crumb & also the famous Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts . Ales is the closest city . It’s about a 20 minute drive from La Bastide des Lavandieres & it has all of the usual large shops & department stores you’d expect to find in a city of it’s size as well as an open air market each Monday .
Other interesting cities worth visiting if time allows are Nimes with it’s famous Roman Amphitheatre & Montpellier which is a bright vibrant modern city which still has some wonderful old architecture & buildings . Once in Montpellier the beaches of the Mediterran are just a short distance away. Uzès is famous throughout France for it’s huge Saturday market when the whole place literally becomes one big open air market . A few minutes drive from Uzès will take you to the famous Pont du Gard - One of the most visited tourist attractions in France and well worth seeing for yourself . Another nearby city of interest to artists & art historians is Arles – the home for a time of Van Gogh . Arles also has some well preserved Roman ruins which are worth a visit too . Avignon with it’s Papal Palace was during the period from 1309 to 1377 the residence of 7 different popes – all French. As well as the Papal Palace Avignon is also famous for it’s bridge – the Pont d’Avignon .
In addition to all of this there are some lovely little villages locally which barely even make it onto the map . Many of these little villages are located close to numerous vineyards most of which welcome visitors throughout the year .
