Vacation Rental Description
The Riverside gite is on the banks of the river Orbieu with wonderful views to Lagrasse's 12th century stone bridge and the Abbey founded by Charlemagne.

This luxury 2 bedroom apartment has been incorporated into what were the medieval ramparts of the village.

Its prime position on the river gives the gite a wonderful feeling of being in the countryside, with the sound of the river to lull you to sleep at night whilst the front of the house opens into the heart of the village and 13th century covered market.

You are only a minute’s walk from restaurants, the bakery, local 'artisans' with their galleries and the village shops.

The house has evolved since its 11th century beginnings and has been renovated to reveal its history: the 17th century timber ceilings, medieval stone arches and terracotta floors. The exterior stone wall is a metre thick but the windows are extremely large letting in lots of sun light and giving you a terrific view to the Mediterranean hillside opposite.

You can watch for the kingfisher from the window or read a book in the riverside garden.

In the Middle Ages, the mansion was two separate houses divided by a cobbled lane. These were combined in the 19th century - the cobbled lane was replaced by a grand stairwell and hallway with a vast glass skylight. It is this that separates the Riverside gite from the Market gite and the Balcony gite.
The Riverside gite is on the first floor. The owners Kate & Roger are on hand should you want advice on local walks or restaurants, beaches or visits. Visit their website for more information and visitors comments.

The Riverside gite has a wood burning stove and central heating for winter breaks and the thoughtful touches and comfort make this apartment home from home.

If you feel the need to leave our riverside garden there are castles to visit, the Mediterranean beckoning and the Canal du midi for a leisurely boat ride. If you want more activity there are beautiful walks from the doorstep, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing, tennis, the abbey to visit and river swimming all in the village.

If the Riverside gite is booked please visit owners website to view the Market & Balcony riverside gite.

  • Lagrasse is known as one of the prettiest villages in France and is only 40 minutes from the Meditterranean beaches and Carcassonne.
There are 4 excellent restaurants, a bakery, a café/bar, shops, a busy delicatessen, tabac, post office, cash dispenser, doctors, chemist, garage and many 'caves' selling their own excellent wine. The 13th century market place (on our doorstep) has a market on Saturday mornings selling organic local produce There are two shops and several wine producers and if all you want to do is relax there is no need for a car.
The vineyards and olive groves of the river valley are an inspiration for artists as is the village itself and the 8th century Abbey. The tennis court, football and boules pitch are open to all and we are happy to lend you racquets and balls.
The area is great for walking and mountain biking, river swimming and horse riding, all of which you can do from the doorstep. Bird Life is abundant.

Thanks for a wonderful escape from busy city life. The Riverside Gite was perfect for our week in rural France. The kitchen is great for making meals and the view out to the river is magical. The apartment is beautiful, peaceful and has all the amenities anyone could need. Having internet access was great for finishing up a few work emails and keeping in touch with home.

We had a couple of lovely meals in Lagrasse. The restaurants were excellent and well priced. We also enjoyed touring the abbey and walking along the riverside. Even pre-tourist season there's lots to do here! It's a very special village that really takes you back in time.

We were sorry to miss the market on Saturday morning, we'll have to catch that next time!

Kate and Roger moved to France in 1992 with their new born baby. Having spent the previous five years working as Hostess and Skipper on sailing yachts in Greece and Turkey, the Mediterranean lifestyle left them with a need for sun and the great outdoors which is what spurred their move from the North of France to the Languedoc in 2001. It was the beauty of Lagrasse and its artistic community that captured their hearts.

Roger trained at Central School of Art where he specialised in ceramics before having his own studio in London but his adventurous spirit eventually took him away travelling to South America where he organised a three month canoe trip up an unexplored tributary of the Amazon. A few years after his return he became head of the sailing team of the Fairbridge Drake charity, working with underprivileged adolescents, many from the probation services taking them on 5 day sailing courses on the east coast of Britain. Now Roger sails for pleasure and keen sailors may be able to join him for the day on his 23ft yacht which is moored on the coast.

Kate trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and then worked as a stage manager for various theatre companies. Over the years her wanderlust took her travelling to America, New Zealand, India and Australia where she worked as a 'jillaroo' on a cattle station. On her return she bought a horse and rode the length of Britain from Land's End to John O'Groats. She travelled off road carrying her tent with her. She now has two horses of her own and loves riding through the vineyards and the Corbieres hills. Kate is keen to have experienced riders join her.

"We feel privileged to live in such beautiful surroundings and lucky to have found the Languedoc; such an unspoilt part of France. We feel very proud of what we have created here and are delighted to be able to share this with our guests. It gives us great pleasure to be able to facilitate a wonderful holiday." Kate & Roger
