Vacation Rental Description
Château de Villarlong is situated in the Minervois, one of the most beautiful and naturally reserved landscapes of South France, between Carcassonne and the Mediterranean coast. In the AOC-Minervois wine-growing area with gentle hills and agricultural anvironment you can also find great historical heritage: the Cité of Carcassonne, the Canal du Midi, the castles of the Catharians, the pilgrims’ way to Santiago de Compostela that passed by Villarlong, and a great variety of historical churches and monuments. The name of Villarlong is derived from the Roman Villa-Longa“; the origins of Villarlong date from the 15th century when the Chateau had been built on a Roman foundation. The village of Villarzel used to belong to the Chateau. There are many remarkable stone constructions, some unique, such as the double rounded stairway, the gothic vaults, the monumental barrel-vault in the South wing, as well as the fantastic ancient stone construction of the stairway, and the historical built-in arches, vaults, and stone walls in the park wing. Spread over the magnificent area of Villarlong, there are a Roman wash-room, a Roman well, greenhouses that are built in and under naturally formed stones, a sun-temple from the Celtic era, a park with centuries old trees, rows of olive trees, 14 acres of wine, fields, sparkling springs, fruit orchards, forest, “garrigue”. The initial church of the Chateau was rebuilt in 1759, and turned into a wine-storage in the early 20th century. Now carefully restored by the present owners, it serves as meeting place and platform for cultural events.
Representing much more than just a holiday apartment, and offering much more privacy than any hotel-suite, every dwelling of Chateau de Villarlong will be a magnificent location for our guests.
The apartments
Both wings of the Chateau have been rebuilt into spacious, extravagant apartments – each with open fireplace and separate patio – for 2, 4 or 6 guests.
The apartments capture an aura of being remote from urban influence in a very special way; the unique atmosphere of the Chateau remains unchanged. The monumental, extravagant basic structures of the building have been maintained. All apartments have modern, well-equipped kitchens, with dishwasher, ceran hot plates, etc. Some of the apartments are designed after a certain motto: the historical background of the Chateau as place of refuge for victims of persecution in the Middle Ages and the colonial connections with Africa and Southeast Asia in the 19th century have been taken up for inspiration - not claiming to be ethnologically perfect. Other apartments are designed according to Mediterranean style. The names are taken from the surrounding castles of the Catharians; the names of the motto-inspired apartments are taken from the country they are referring to.
Cour du Soleil (South Wing)
The South Wing will impress you with a fantastic, picturesque panoramic view over a landscape with soft hills, cypress-trees, stone-pines, and vines – quite similar to impressions from the Toscana or the Provence – which seem to be so very often quoted. In the South Wing, nine typical Mediterranean style apartments as well as motto-designed apartments will be found.
"Villa Benoué" for 4 guests is very beautiful separate house with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 separate toilets, kitchen, and living room with open fireplace, ancient stones and very large windows. It is interesting how the different styles harmonize, details from Africa support the colonial style. Take a deep breath and relax – on the simply beautiful terrace, and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view.
Cour du Jardin Francais (Park Wing)
The Park Wing displays a ravishing variety of oleander, roses, and lavender surrounding a romantic box-tree garden. All three Park Wing apartments are designed in typical Mediterranean style.
