Magical

My husband, sister & I stayed for 5 nights in Oct & loved it. We were all non drivers, plus I was 7 months pregnant, & we found we didn't need a car. Deborah was kind enough to pick us up on arrival at the the train station (& did the same on the return) & even let us get a lift with her to Tours one day. The train station was in walking distance (about 40 mins) which we did once when visiting Chenonceau. This was a beautiful chateau, but strangely enough we didn't enjoy it as much as Saint Aignan's chateau. This may sound strange, seeing as you can't actually even go in it, but there was something magical about wandering around the grounds at Saint Aignan & the different stages and wings of the chateau. As it was out of season when we visited we were the only ones on the grounds and I guess this made it feel even more special, compared to the hive of tourists at Chenonceau. We also loved the cathedral and the amazing paintings in the crypt, which were worth the trip alone. Saint Aignan is small but perfectly formed and makes for an amazing break which will leave you feeling like you've experienced a true bit of French life. Only regret is that we couldn't stay longer and missed the Sat market.
Plenty of places to eat - our favourites were the Pizza place on the square (staff were brilliant), Le Mange Grenouille (expensive but definitely worth at least 1 visit) & for snacks, drinks & great ambience the little bar/bistro on the bridge (lovely place & absolutely lovely owner).
Everywhere we went the people were lovely. This included the train journey there which involved some issues with our tickets, one very awkward inspector & a carriage full of people acting as translators, advisers and generally helping us out. Which brings us back to Deborah, who was the perfect host - amazingly helpful, friendly, approachable without being intrusive. The gite was even better than I expected. The bedrooms were so sweet and comfortable and the location on the square made us feel part of the town. Deborah had done some shopping for us so we had everything we needed when we arrived in the evening. There was lots of information on places to visit & Deborah was more than happy to help with any questions. With regard to the aforementioned train ticket problems she went out of her way to resolve it for us (we couldn't have sorted it out without her). We left there feeling like we'd made a friend & are really looking forward to seeing her & Saint Aignan again.

Excellent Family Stay Experience

Wow, what a fantastic place to stay.
We are a young family, three little girls, 6, 3 and 1. We wanted a hoiday of experience life in a small rural village in a cottage with character. La Petite Boutique provided us with this and more.
Deborah is the most charming and attentive host. The gite has everything that you need for a comfortable stay. We arrived in winter, the house warm and extremely clean.
For a family, my girls loved it. The charming ramble of the house amazed my girls. When we were not out exploring this fantastic part of France, the Gite had ample games for the kids.
St Anigan itself is beautiful, we were happy to spend our time exploring this town.
Thank you Deborah for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage, our only complaint was we did not spend long enough there.
We certainly will recommend you to all our friends.

Charming Cottage and Village

My son and daughter-in-law stayed at la Petite Boutique last year and adored it, as soon as I saw the photos I wanted to go.
Deborah kindly met me at the station and had bought a few essentials(gorgeous bread and cheeses) and I felt at home immediately. The cottage is beautifully restored and very attractively decorated and furnished. Everything that you need is available.
I don't drive so it was important that I could get around easily by public transport. The train runs from Tours to Nevers going through Chenonceaux and Bourges, there's a bus to Blois. The village of St. Aignan is perfect, there are many very old buildings including the château and the church of Saint Aignan, which has some beautiful wall paintings. The village is so peaceful and the people very friendly, it's like going back in time.
The River Cher is magical, I walked by it daily and also took a boat trip which I recommend. There's a market in the square on a saturday morning, it was fun to shop there.

A Fantastic French Experience
Jim, Liz, Rob and Jacqui Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
Review Submitted: July 2, 2010 Date of Stay: May 2010
We stayed at La Petite Boutique because of its excellent reviews and its central location in a French village.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this delightful gite. It was everything it was reported to be and much more. The location in the middle of St Aignan gave us the opportunity to explore and become part of this quaint French village. We appreciated the fact that Deborah had warned us that the square was undergoing renovations, and although this was noisy during the day, there was no disturbance at night. We actually enjoyed watching the progress of work done each day, and we would love to see the square in its remodelled form -next visit!
On our arrival, Deborah explained everything to us, and made us feel thoroughly welcome by offering assistance to us, if needed, at any time during our stay. The property was spotless. Every possible amenity was provided to add to our comfort and we loved the welcoming touches! The was an abundance of tourist information which was of great assistance to us in our planning. We thought the accommodation was excellent value.
Our hire car enabled us to see much of the Loire Valley. Our visits to the chateaux, Chenonceau, with its beautiful gardens, and Cheverny, with its lavish furnishings (and all those dogs!) were a highlight. We visited the wineries and took full advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the quality and value of the beautiful French wines.
We had easy access to the villages of Montrichard, Montresor and larger towns of Loche and Blois. However, most of all we enjoyed wandering aroung our village, St Aignan - the chateau, picnics by the Cher River, visits to the church and the crypt and morning visits to the boulangerie for croissants and baguettes.
Following the recommendations of previous reviews we ate at Le Mange Grenouille, but found our meal and French dining experience much more appealing and entertaining at Le Crepiot. We enjoyed take away pizzas one evening, and on the other nights cooked in the gite, making use of the well appointed kitchen and the fresh food available from the village shops.
We would recommend this gite, and St Aignan, to our friends or relatives without hestitation. The opportunity to stay in such comfort and become part of French village life was a holiday that we will always remember.
We have made La Petite Boutique as comfortable as if it was our own home. We are pleased everyone has found it to be so. Comfort and cleanliness at the cottage and having good holiday experience are of the utmost importance. We welcome you personally and advice you on the best places to go depending on your tastes and wishes. La Petite Boutique offers you independence but with the reassurance that advice and help are never far away.La Petite Boutique gently lulls and soothes our guests into the French way of life in this ancient, rural, small market town. It makes an ideal place to stay for those who do not wish to /cannot drive yet want to be able to enjoy a different view of France without being in an overly touristic environment. There is no need to drive to enjoy this spectacular area as there is a train and bus service. We are happy to transport you to and from the train station on arrival and departure. After a day sightseeing, no one has to drive to go to a restaurant as they are all within walking distance as are the local shops. However I would recommend a car to be able to fully apreciate the area. You are immersed into the life of the square where the cottage is situated. The 200 year old market is every Saturday morning in the square, and there is often music being played by a local musician. This, plus the smell of roasting chickens and roast potatoes, the sellers chatting with the local town’s folk as they buy their groceries make an ambience not to be missed. An evening stroll through the town’s cobbled streets and secluded alleyways is to step back in time. Or just sit outside and watch the world go by with the locals and sample their wine. A morning saunter to the baker and then along the river refreshes you for another day of relaxing or activity. La Petite Boutique is very old and full of character, including the steep stairs, and therefore is not suitable for disabled/infirm persons.
